The weather system was forecast to move into the Great Lakes region before hitting the Northeast on Monday, according to CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.

Blizzard warnings were in effect early on Monday in northeast Missouri through metro Chicago and northeast into MI as the storm brought winds up to 45 miles per hour (72 kph) and more than 12 inches (15 cm) of snow to the region, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. The action came as a large stretch of Interstate 70, spanning much of the state, was closed between Junction City and WaKeeney.

Jeff Colyer issued a state of emergency declaration for the state and officials said road conditions were "treacherous" in some areas. Kansas City International Airport got 5.3 inches of snow, and at least 7 inches of snow was reported in Rockford, Illinois. Schools in parts of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL called off Monday classes.

One of the busiest travel days of the year in the United States was beset by even more complications as the Midwest dealt with a major snowstorm. Streets were dark, and many were without power, he said.

The National Weather Service was warning those conditions would make travel hard in places. Flights were mostly on time Monday at Kansas City International Airport, one day after the storm caused widespread delays. Sustained winds of between 30 and 45 miles per hour are anticipated in some areas, with the possibility of 65 miles per hour gusts.

Temps in the mid 30s falling to the low 30s with winds NNW 10-20 miles per hour gusting to 30 miles per hour at times. Parts of MI, the eastern shores of Lake Erie, as well ME could see up to a foot or more of snow before the storm exits the U.S. by Wednesday morning, Guy said.

The storm is moving to the lower Great Lakes, making its way toward New England by Tuesday.

By Monday, Brink said, the storm will have moved into the Northeast. A major winter storm across Kansas, Missouri and IL has caused hundreds cancellations and delays.
