Two Democratic candidates will become the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. Tlaib, who ran unopposed to represent Michigan's 17th congressional district, will become the first Palestinian-American congresswoman.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 29-year-old Hispanic activist who won a surprising primary victory against a 10-term white incumbent, is the youngest woman elected to Congress. Ayanna Pressley, a 44-year-old member of the Boston City Council who scored a similar upset win, is the first black woman elected to Congress from MA.

This year's United States midterm elections have already made history, with a record number of women, Native Americans, and Muslim candidates running for office.

In Kansas, Sharice Davids, a Democrat running in a suburban Kansas City district, will become one of the first Native American women elected to Congress, and the first openly LGBT person to represent Kansas at the federal level.

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Youngest Woman In Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rocked the political world when she defeated Joe Crowley, a 10-term congressman who politicos thought would take over for House Minority Leader.

A Republican who served in the House will become the first woman to represent Tennessee in the Senate.

That ad was part of a blitz by Trump's campaign, and his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, did several interviews to promote it. As for the new video, though, the campaign was silent Thursday and Parscale did not respond to requests for comment.

Democratic senators Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota lost their races, while Republican representative Marsha Blackburn became the first woman elected to the US Senate from Tennessee.

Democrats won women's vote for Congress by 19 points, with 59 per cent voting Democrat and 40 per cent voting Republican - the largest margin seen in midterm exit polls, according to data from CNN. Although the House of Representatives fell under control of the Democrats, many were disappointed at the lack of greater electoral successes.

Some Democrats aren't blaming candidates like Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) or Andrew Gillum (R-Fla.) for their election night losses - they're blaming white women. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who cruised to an easy victory in New York's 14th District, will be the youngest member of the House at age 29 - but only just behind Abby Finkenauer, who won in Iowa's 1st District and is also 29.

A lawyer and former MMA fighter, Davids became the first Native American congresswoman and the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas.

Women made history in the 2018 midterm elections. Women won at the state level across the country as well - in gubernatorial races, Laura Kelly beat notorious vote suppressor Kris Kobach in Kansas, Gretchen Whitmer beat Bill Schuette in MI, and Michelle Lujan Grisham beat Steve Pearce in New Mexico. By Tuesday, 183 women Democrats were on the ballot for the House of Representatives. On Tuesday, James won her seat for New York State Attorney General. "Have the awkward conversations, take the emotional labor off the backs of women who have more on their g***amn plate than we ever will. Do". Democratic women won one Republican-held seat in IL, two in Iowa, and one in Kansas. Democrat Janet Mills of ME and Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota are the first women elected as governor in their state. Their lesson from the last election was that "if Donald Trump is president, anybody can be president so I should run too, for at least Congress or state legislature". Many female Democratic House candidates who prevailed on Election Day ran in opposition to Trump or his policies.

From Florida to New Mexico, these candidates brought platforms that stood for a range of issues such as affordable health care, gun safety and climate change.
