As the number of people living with diabetes continues to rise, the access to insulin needed to meet growing demand will fall short, a new study predicts.

"Many people with diabetes are experiencing increased burdens due to the high out-of-pocket costs for insulin, which can negatively impact their lives and health", said Cefalu in a statement in May.

The findings suggest that the total number of type 2 diabetes sufferers will increase by 20%, from 406 million in 2018 to 551 million in 2030. Assuming insulin access remains the same in 2030 as it is today, the study found that type 2 diabetics in Africa and Asia will have the greatest unmet needs.

The study's lead author, Stanford University's Dr. Sanjay Basu, described the situation as a "looming health challenge".

Global insulin supply is dominated by three companies - Novo Nordisk, Sanofi and Eli Lilly - which have various programs to try to improve access to their products. Study Says The Ketogenic Diet Could Increase The Risk For Type 2 Diabetes.

"Despite the UN's commitment to treat non-communicable diseases and ensure universal access to drugs for diabetes, across much of the world insulin is scarce and unnecessarily hard for patients to access", said lead author Sanjay Basu from Stanford University, US. Not all diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, however, will need insulin; only 79 million people by 2030 would need to take insulin.

India had 69.2 million people living with diabetes in 2015 says a report of the World Health Organization

Insulin use is expected to rise 20 percent by 2030, and many people who need it for type 2 diabetes won't have access, a study from Stanford University suggests.

The study was published Tuesday in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

"In spite of the UN's promise to treat non-communicable illness and guarantee global access to drugs for diabetes, over most part of the world insulin is rare and superfluously troublesome for patients to have an access".

Overall, Basu and colleagues calculated that global insulin use was set to rise to 634 million 1,000-unit vials by 2030, from 526 million in 2018.

"Unless governments begin initiatives to make insulin available and affordable, then its use is always going to be far from optimal", Basu said.

They also estimated the potential number of insulin users, amount of insulin required, and the burden of diabetes complications in adults aged 18 or older. According to a American Diabetes Association, prices of insulin have nearly tripled between 2002 and 2013.
