Turkish investigators are reportedly pursuing an alternative theory - that Khashoggi's body was dissolved in acid.

The "only logical conclusion", he said, was that those who had killed the Saudi journalist in Istanbul had destroyed his body "to leave no trace behind".

Saudi Arabia has faced a torrent of global condemnation over the killing of the royal insider-turned-critic.

"We now see that it wasn't just cut up, they got rid of the body by dissolving it", Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Erdogan and official in Turkey's ruling party, told the Hurriyet newspaper on Friday.

Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, has written in the Washington Post, calling on the global community to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The affair has created Saudi Arabia's worst diplomatic crisis since 9/11 and sullied the reputation of powerful crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom it is believed at a minimum must have been aware of the murder plan.

The reported phone call to the White House came before Saudi Arabia admitted Khashoggi had been killed.

A Saudi official has denied that the Crown Prince made the allegations, saying that "routine calls do exist from time to time" between the young leader and top USA officials but that "no such commentary was conveyed".

Istanbul's prosecutor confirmed on Wednesday that the writer had been strangled.

The Washington Post reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told senior Trump administration officials that Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and was unsafe, although later, in public, the crown prince described the killing as a "terrible mistake".

The journalist's body has still not been found, a month after his disappearance on 2 October, when he entered the consulate to obtain marriage papers, while his fiance, Hatice Cengiz waited outside.

The American right-wing Christian delegation, which included Mike Evans, founder of the Jerusalem Prayer Team, met with Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi ambassador to the US prince Khalid bin Salman and secretary-general of the Muslim World League Mohammed al-Issa.

Johnnie Moore, the group's spokesman who also serves as the White House's unofficial liaison to conservative evangelicals, said they "discussed" Khashoggi's killing, but declined to elaborate, and he insisted they were not representing Israel or Trump in any way.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible. We were encouraged by the candor of the two-hour conversation with him today", the statement said.

Riyadh initially denied it had anything to do with the critic's disappearance and then changed its story several times, first claiming Khashoggi died in a fist fight before admitting Turkish evidence suggested his killing was premeditated.

She called on governments around the world to take action to reveal the truth, accusing the United States of taking a position "devoid of moral foundation".

"It is now up to the worldwide community to bring the perpetrators to justice".
