After weeks of leaks, Irfan Fidan's comments mark the first detailed account by Turkish officials of what they believe happened to Khashoggi after he vanished on October 2.

The statement came short of accusing the Saudis of non-cooperation talking about meeting of the Saudi Chief Prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb and his entourage with Turkish law enforcement authorities earlier this week.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday demanded that Saudi Arabia reveal the location of Khashoggi's body and hand over 18 suspects.

"The victim's body was dismembered and destroyed following his death by suffocation".

During the meetings, the Turkish side asked where Khashoggi's body was, whether the Saudi investigation had discovered anything regarding the planning stage of the killing and the identity of the reported "local cooperator".

18 officials who were linked to the plan to murder Khashoggi have been arrested by Saudi.

In a sign of the pressure on the Saudi leadership to change course, top US officials on Wednesday demanded peace talks within a month to end the Yemen conflict.

"Experts on Saudi Arabia are virtually unanimous in saying that such an audacious mission must have been known about, and most likely was ordered, by the kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman", it said.

Cengiz said Khashoggi's death had "left a void in (her) heart and soul", adding: "If only I knew what would happen, I would have entered the consulate myself".

Unnamed Turkish officials have previously told media outlets that they had audio and visual evidence to prove their accounts of the writer's death, but nothing has been released.

The case has sorely strained relations between Saudi Arabia and the West, and has fuelled global debate about arms deliveries to the ultra-conservative kingdom.

A well-known critic of the Saudi authorities, the journalist Jamal Khashoggi went missing on 2 October.

Khashoggi, a 59-year-old columnist for The Washington Post, vanished after entering the consulate in Istanbul to pick up paperwork for his upcoming marriage to his fiancee, who was waiting for him outside.

Turkey says. the Saudi journalist who was murdered in Istanbul was immediately strangled as he entered the Saudi consulate.

Under mounting global pressure, Saudi Arabia has changed its narrative about Khashoggi's death several times.

"The explanations given so far by Saudi Arabia are not sufficient", Cengiz said.
