  • Cid Harbour at Whitsunday Islands where a man in his 30s was attacked by a shark

A man has died after he was attacked by a shark while swimming in Cid Harbour at the Whitsunday Islands, where two tourists were mauled a few months ago.

Christidis was taken by helicopter to the Mackay Base Hospital, 100 kilometres (60 miles) to the south, where he died.

The attack is the third serious incident involving sharks to occur in the Cid Harbour in under two months.

Ben McCauley, one of the RACQ CQ rescue crew members who helped airlift the man to hospital, described the scene as "gruesome", according to CNN affiliate Seven News.

The last shark attack in the Whitsunday Islands before the latest spate occurred on February 13, 2010, off Dent Island where 60-year-old tourist Patricia Trumbull survived lacerations to her buttocks and major blood loss.

She lost a lot of blood, and a doctor on a nearby boat is credited with saving her life, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported Monday.

Mr Costigan said Queensland's shark control program was in place in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and the Gold Coast, but there were no protections in place on the Whitsundays.

Whitsunday Water Police will be patrolling the waters today.

Sunday's announcement by Sirisena came as the country's main Tamil party urged him to end the worsening political crisis. A police informant has said Wickremesinghe and a Cabinet member, former army commander Sarath Fonseka, were behind it.

Following the first two attacks, the state government rolled out drumlines in the Harbour, killing 6 tiger sharks.

Sea World's director of marine sciences Trevor Long said our three most unsafe sharks all had different feeding patterns but there were similarities in the way they hunted their prey.

The middle-aged man was believed to be a tourist, and was bitten on his left inner thigh, right calf and left wrist after swimming in the bay on 5 November.

An aspiring Melbourne cancer specialist has been remembered as a rare individual of great promise, following his death from a shark attack in Queensland's Whitsundays region.

"Despite their best efforts, the injuries were too severe", O'Connell said.

Drum lines are aquatic traps that use a series of buoys and baited hooks to lure sharks.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the meeting, which will be held on Friday, would enable local industry representatives and officials to sit down directly with experts.

"All the agencies are working together to ensure people are being warned in the area now - do not swim in Cid Harbour", he said.
