  • Nigeria Army tweets Trump video to justify armed protest clampdown

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) had declared that 46 of its members were killed after policemen and officers of the Nigerian Army opened fire on the protesters.

Trump said in a speech on Thursday that rocks thrown by migrants on the US-Mexico border should be considered as firearms.

The Nigerian army posted - then later deleted - a video on Twitter of President Donald Trump bashing the migrant caravan heading north through Mexico. "We're not going to put with that", the president said in the video. His recent inflammatory statements, made days before the U.S. midterm elections, have clearly been seized upon by some in the Nigerian military as an abusive new standard to which they would like to adhere. "We're going to arrest those people", he told reporters.

The organisation's statement is the response to the Nigerian Army's tweets using President Trump's words to justify the fatal shooting of rock-throwing protesters and the subsequent issuing of a statement denouncing Amnesty International's calls for accountability.

Amnesty International (AI) has urged the United States of America and Nigeria to stop trying to justify human right abuses but to as a matter of priority abide by international human rights law and standards.

'Not only did they use stones but they were carrying petrol bombs, machetes and knives, so yes, we consider them as being armed.

A spokesman for the Nigerian army told the BBC "this is what Trump was talking about", and said their decision to fire live rounds at protesters was justified because they were armed. Nigeria's military said it killed six people and claims the protesters had fired first. If they want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back.

Amnesty International and leaders of the protest said more than 40 people were killed at the march and two smaller marches, with more than 100 wounded by bullets.

USA congressman Adam Schiff has blamed, President Donald Trump over the recent killings of Shiite protesters by the Nigerian army in Abuja.

Amnesty's Nigeria Executive Director, Osai Ojigho, on Saturday in a statement said the basic rights of humans are not subject to the whims and caprices of leaders.

Trump, however, has made clear his intention to strengthen the US-Nigerian partnership, despite minimal efforts by Nigeria at genuine reform.

Asked about the president's remarks, a Pentagon spokesperson said, "We will not discuss hypothetical situations or specific measures within our rules on the use of force, but our forces Are trained professionals who always have the inherent right of defense". IMN says that at least 42 people were killed by Nigerian forces on Monday and Tuesday. It was an undisguised attempt to use the rhetoric as justification for soldiers' widely-condemned use of lethal force.

IMN members had clashed with soldiers in some parts of Abuja.
