The gale force winds could lead to damage and cause disruption to transport networks, the warning states.

The Met Office statement reads: "A weather system will move northeastwards across the United Kingdom on Thursday bringing widespread strong winds".

The yellow warning runs from 03:00 until 15:00 GMT.

Some rain showers are forecast for Tuesday, but the more severe wet and windy weather will push in from the south west tomorrow. "Winds will moderate across the south of the warning area by evening and then across remaining parts overnight".

Rain and strong winds will return to Reading on Wednesday, November 28 as conditions linked to Portuguese-named Storm Diana near the UK. "Heavy rain is also likely with totals of up to 35 mm possible in some places".

Powerful winds topping 85 km/h will blast all of Ireland as well as Scotland, Wales, southeast England and northern England during the day on Wednesday.

The warning has been put in place for 3am to 2pm on Thursday.

Storm Diana is set to bring heavy rain and severe gales of up to 70mph to the United Kingdom today.

"There is a strong likelihood of severe weather orange warning for this particular event", she said. The worst of the weather expected to be around 6pm.

Wind gusts of 60 miles per hour are expected, while some exposed areas could see gust of 70 miles per hour.

The weather caused 62 flights from Heathrow to be cancelled and 380 to be delayed by more than 15 minutes on Tuesday morning. Southerly winds will increase very strong with gale gusts.
