Yesterday's incident involved large groups of migrants ignoring and overwhelming Mexican law enforcement, then attempting to enter the United States through vehicle lanes at San Ysidro and El Chaparral, and then through breaches in the worldwide border fence between ports of entry.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry has asked the United States to investigate US Border Patrol agents' use of tear gas on migrants attempting to cross the border.

She and hundreds of other Central American migrants were blocked by Mexican police and staged a protest in front of the border, some rushing the U.S fence. The children also went to the hospital and were turned over to immigration authorities.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents transported the woman to a local hospital for treatment.

The President later also denied that the tear gas was used against children. "We've made numerous proposals", Schumer told reporters Tuesday.

"We didn't. We don't use it (tear gas) on children", he said. US authorities shut down the nation's busiest border crossing for several hours.

The US military said Monday that about 300 troops who had been deployed in south Texas and Arizona as part of a border security mission have been moved to California for similar work.

United States troops deployed to the border on Trump's orders were not involved in the operation.

Overall, the Pew study was in line with previous research that has found many unauthorized immigrants have been living in the United States for years and their children are more likely to have been born in the country than overseas. "It's going to take a while to mark the evidence and use a bunch of resources, meanwhile [they're] going to keep this person in the United States whom [they] could just remove anyway".

"Rocking" or being "rocked" is how agents refer to the increasingly common tactic of migrants throwing large stones at the Border Patrol, hoping to wound or frighten agents. Democratic leaders - including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) - have said they would approve $1.6 billion for the wall, placing the two sides billions of dollars apart as the lame-duck session begins.

Most were dispirited after the US agents fired tear gas on the group of migrants trying to cross into the USA on Sunday.

"We're very busy", Hastings said.

San Diego Border Patrol Sector chief Rodney Scott said 42 people were arrested and some children inhaled the tear gas, but they were not intended targets.

Tijuana wants the situation resolved as quickly as possible: either asylum seekers approach the border peacefully and declare their intentions, or they accept one of Mexico's offers.

"No circumstance justifies the use of force against migrants, particularly in the case of women and children", the Salvadoran government said in a statement. "We have never been the issue here", Ryan said at news conference.

A Honduran migrant converses with U.S border agents on the other side of razor wire after they fired tear gas at migrants pressuring to cross into the US. The chaos followed what began as a peaceful march to appeal for the USA to speed processing of asylum claims. The country's Interior Department said about 500 people attempted to rush the border, while USA authorities put the number at 1000.

The events made Mina rethink his family's plan of making it to the U.S. He says he's heard people talk of Rosarito, a beach town popular with U.S. tourists about a 40-minute drive south of Tijuana.
