  • Amazon’s Alexa suffers outages on Christmas Day as device appeared to cope with onslaught of new users

Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant suffered service outages in Europe on Christmas Day, likely because of a flood of new users using the Alexa app. Amazon said that 2018 brought record sales for smart home devices, and the company's own Echo Dot smart speaker was one of the best-selling items.

Other popular Alexa skills included turning holiday lights on and off, sending reminders, setting more than 100 million timers, requesting recipes and cooking advice, listening to holiday stories and asking Alexa how many more days/nights/sleeps until Christmas. Glam Glitter Series Doll, Carhartt clothing items and Bose QuietComfort Wireless Headphones.

Amazon's holiday shopping announcement is filled with other interesting facts about new retail trends. Along with the Christmas sales report, as the picture seems to be much brighter than the Amazon initially projected in its latest earnings results.

The internet retailer revealed that "tens of millions of people across the globe" signed up for its prime service which offers the two-day shipping on the millions of items as well as with the music and video streaming.

The dupe app claimed to be a guide to the users to set up the Amazon Alexa devices along with listing down various commands, however, actually didn't help at all. In total more than a billion products were shipped for free worldwide to Amazon Prime subscribers this season. Amazon gave back during the holidays as well.

The developer is a company called One World Software, which has two other apps available for iOS users.

The "Yellow Vest" protests have support of 41% of the French, unchanged in a week, an Elabe poll for BFM TV said Wednesday. Authorities stopped 109 people for questioning in Paris , BFM TV reported, citing the Prefecture de police.

The couriers are bracing for a second wave of business as people begin returning gifts in January.

With the S&P teetering on a bear market after a volatile fourth quarter and the worst December in more than a decade, Baird analyst Colin Sebastian lists Amazon as one of the three best picks for investors in the event of a market rebound.

Amazon also announced that millions of Alexa-powered Amazon devices, like the Echo Dot, were sold this year.

It would appear that a malicious app by the name of "Setup for Amazon Alexa" climbed the Apple app store charts all the way to the top 10 before its removal.
