  • Carla Stefaniak: Body Found in Search for Missing Woman Who Disappeared During Costa Rica Birthday Trip

The body was found Monday in a wooded area behind the Villa Le Mas Airbnb Stefaniak was staying at in San Antonio de Escazú, a suburb of San José, Costa Rica.

Espinoza said all data gathered indicates the body is Stefaniak's; however, investigators are waiting to compare fingerprints from the body with Federal Bureau of Investigation records and noted dental and DNA records may be used to definitively identify the body as Stefaniak if fingerprints are not conclusive.

The owner of the Airbnb told Carlos Caicedo, Stefaniak's brother, a security guard saw his sister on the morning of her flight, getting into a vehicle at 5 a.m. local time (6 a.m. EST).

Ms Stefaniak, who was born in Venezuela but has lived in Miami since 2000, travelled to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law, April Burton, on 22 November.

Authorities in Costa Rica said a body found near an Airbnb matches that of Carla Stefaniak, a USA tourist who went missing five days ago, CBS Miami reports.

Investigators found blood inside of Stefaniak's room and on the property of the AirBnB she was staying at, BBC World News reports.

After Stefaniak was reported missing, agents began to investigate where she was last seen. A Gofundme account said she was last heard from around 8 p.m. on November 27 and she didn't show up for her 1 p.m. flight home the next day. Relatives raised the alarm after she stopped texting and telephoning home and was not on her return flight from Costa Rica, where she had been vacationing.

That led them to search the area around the department, where the bound the body, which was covered with plastic bags.

When Jaime got to the airport around 5pm, she went inside to wait for her friend. "Three hundred meters away we found her body". The woman said that "it's pretty sketchy here", Burton said. The last text from Stefaniak came in around 8 p.m. Burton returned to Tampa last Tuesday, but Stefaniak was scheduled to head back the following day.

Espinoza said 32-year-old Bismark Espinosa Martinez, a security guard for the property, has been arrested in the killing.

The man, who is a Nicaraguan national, was staying in the apartment next to Stefaniak's rental.

"She also suffered a blow to the head", said Walter Espinoza, head of the country's Judicial Investigation Department.

The Miami Herald reported that Stefaniak immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 2000 and works for a Miami insurance agency.

Burton had previously warned that Stefaniak may have been kidnapped as an Uber driver who was scheduled to drive her to the airport said she had taken another vehicle there. I started sending her birthday messages and no-one had heard from her at all. Stefaniak had also checked into the flight, Jaime said, which she always did.

"Her flight wasn't until 1:30". The last time she posted to social media accounts was the previous night.
