  • China hails Trump Xi summit says ‘very confident’ in trade deal

"China will start from agricultural products, autos and energy to immediately implement specific items that China and the USA have agreed upon", Ministry of Commerce Spokesman Gao Feng told reporters in Beijing.

The commerce ministry's remarks came days after Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, agreed to give negotiators 90 days to resolve their trade spat.

China's President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump attend a welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 9 November 2017.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump recently held a meeting at a working dinner in Buenos Aires, reaching important consensus and agreeing not to impose new additional tariffs. Mr Trump said Chinese officials had been sending "strong signals" since they "returned from their long trip [to the G20 in Buenos Aires]".

But as part of the truce agreed to by Mr Xi and Mr Trump, the USA will not raise tariffs further on Jan 1, so further talks can take place.

The two sides will also discuss intellectual property protection, technology cooperation, market access and balanced trade, and "work hard to reach a consensus", Mr Gao said. It would also begin buying products from USA farmers "immediately", the United States said.

On Tuesday, Trump tweeted about the potential for a deal with China, before warning that if a deal wasn't reached in 90 days he would slap more tariffs on China because he was "a Tariff Man".

The two sides will negotiate structural changes to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, cyber-intrusions and cybertheft, services and agriculture, according to the White House. It was unclear if Gao was referring to the tariffs in his remarks to reporters.

The U.S. has already slapped tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports.

China has indicated that it is confident it can strike a lasting trade deal with the United States.
