Drones suspend flights at Gatwick Airport in UK

Some people reported being left stuck on planes for several hours while they waited to find out what was going on.

Gatwick officials said two drone were sighted near the runway. All flights in and out were halted.

"We will update when we have suitable reassurances that it is appropriate to re-open the runway".

Under British legislation, drones can not be flown near aircraft or airports, or at an altitude of over 400 feet (122 metres).

A statement said: 'Following reports of two drones flying over the Gatwick Airport airfield, we have had to suspend flights while this is investigated.

A number of flights from Gatwick to Dublin have been delayed this morning.

"We advise everyone flying from Gatwick, or collecting someone from the airport, Thursday 20 December, to check the status of their flight".

Gatwick airport apologised for the suspension but said the safety of passengers was a priority.

More than two dozen arriving planes have been diverted, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24.

Kasia Jaworska told the BBC she had been travelling from Glasgow to Gatwick with her boyfriend when her flight was diverted to Luton.

The airline responded: "Sorry about that, Elly".

"I have 2 tiny children on board and a hotel room at Gatwick to get to", one passenger whose flight was redirected, complained to British Airways on Twitter. Something that's not within our control.

Passengers faced delays to their travels as some flights were unable to leave the tarmac while others were diverted to alternative airports. Flights were grounded and inbound planes were diverted elsewhere.
