Former US president dies at 94

  • George H. W. Bush, the 41st US president, dies

George HW Bush, who has died aged 94, will go down in history as the president in charge at the end of the Cold War who took the United States into the first Gulf conflict.

By then, Bush's son, George W. Bush, was in his second term in the White House, having taken the United States to war against Iraq for a second time in 2003, and eclipsing his father's record by winning re-election in 2004.

A brief but deep recession saw the popularity he gained from his diplomatic win evaporate, costing him a second term in office.

In a statement issued early Saturday, Bush's successor, Bill Clinton said he would be "forever grateful" for the friendship he formed with the former president he turned out of the White House after one term. Before getting the keys to the White House, he served eight years as the vice president of Republican icon Ronald Reagan. He ran against one of Bush's sons, Jeb Bush, in the GOP presidential primaries in 2016, and he was sharply critical of the presidency of another son, George W. Bush.

In 1988, Bush was elected president over Democratic Sen.

On Friday night, following news of Bush's death, Meacham tweeted a quotation from a prayer: "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him".

The magazine ended up only publishing images of Bush at work, but photographer Leonard McCombe also captured the balance of Bush's life-the home and family that he left behind when he went off to NY to the United Nations.

President Bush always found a way to set the bar higher.

Bush was president of the US from 1989-1993 and brought a "dedication to traditional American values" and a determination to make the USA a "kinder and gentler nation", according to a White House biography.

"Not merely for the years he spent as our forty-first President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved - from a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in World War II, to commander-in-chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way".

"Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight - and all who were inspired by George and Barbara's example".

In 1992, Bush lost his re-election bid to Clinton - whose aide coined the now famous slogan "It's the economy, stupid" - as eccentric third-party candidate Ross Perot syphoned off conservative votes.

Bush had one of the most impressive résumés in American public life.

Bush was born June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts.

"The campus really appreciates President Bush and his service".

Bush had a pampered upbringing and attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, but delayed his acceptance to Yale in order to enlist in the US Navy on his 18th birthday and head off to war.

Upon her death, a spokesman for George Sr said he was "broken-hearted to lose his beloved wife of 73 years".

He flew combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto and won the Distinguished Flying Cross.
