Lebanon envoy to UN: Israel is violating UN resolution

  • Israel launches military operation to destroy 'cross-border terror tunnels'

The despatch of a "technical team" to Israel was agreed at a meeting chaired by UNIFIL chief Stefano Del Col at its headquarters in Ras Al-Naqoura with senior officers from the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces, a statement said.

The tweet referred to a new IDF strategy called Operation Northern Shield, launched overnight Monday by the Israeli army to destroy Hezbollah's cross-border terror tunnels.

UNIFIL's primary mission is to enforce UN Resolution 1701, something Israeli officials routinely criticize the peacekeeping force for failing to do. Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said the "attack tunnels" were not yet operational.

"We are not now in a situation where our soldiers are behind enemy lines", said Livni, who served as foreign minister during Israel's 2006 war with Hezbollah.

In a statement, the Lebanese army called Israeli reports of tunnels across the border "allegations".

In a tweet on Wednesday, the embassy stated, "No doubt that Israel has the right to protect its national security, including to prevent the illegal entry of anyone into the country".

Officials said the tunnel is being dug from the Lebanese village of Ramyeh and has already crossed into Israeli territory.

On the recent Israel's movement, Ali Rammal, mayor of Adaisseh village in southern Lebanon said: "The situation of the settlements and border areas is quite natural despite the operation of the Israeli army on the other side of the border".

Browner on Tuesday reportedly pled no contest to one count of attempted murder and two counts of willful child endangerment. Browner, who has been in custody since July, will receive credit for 300 days for good behavior thus far, per TMZ.

According to Mudallali, such Israeli actions constitute a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this week that Hezbollah was planning to send fighters through the tunnels to launch attacks and he expanded on his comments on Thursday.

During their closed door meeting in Brussels, Netanyahu was said to have told Pompeo that Israel would act militarily against Hezbollah if Lebanon failed to confront the Iranian proxy terror group. Mudallali stressed that Israel's actions are a violation of United Nations resolution 1701, which was approved resolve the Israel-Lebanon conflict and ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

The British Ambassador to Israel David Quarrey stated that the "UK condemns such tunnels as blatant and destabilising violation of United Nations resolutions".

However, the Israelis have violated Lebanese land, sea and airspace more than 1,300 times this year through November 15.

The UNIFIL force commander, Maj. UNIFIL's commander, Dick Cole, is in close contact with all the Lebanese armed forces and the Israeli army, and wants all sides to maintain calm.

Netanyahu is seeking to hold his governing coalition together after last month's resignation of defence minister Avigdor Lieberman over a controversial Gaza ceasefire, which left him clinging to a one-seat majority in parliament.

Also on Thursday, the Jerusalem Post quoted another official saying that Russian Federation has deployed forces on the Syrian-Lebanese border with the aim of preventing the transfer of weapons and precision-guided technology to Hezbollah.
