O2 customers impacted by the outage aren't able to access data and the company said they may experience "intermittent issues" when making voice calls as well.

The outage also has serious implications for places that rely upon the O2 network for real-time informational services, as reported by the Independent.

It said in a statement that the faulty software that caused these issues was being decommissioned.

It said: "This allowed hundreds of people from both our technical teams and our third-party supplier's teams to focus on fixing the problem, helping us to restore data services as quickly as we can which will also help reduce the high network demand we're now seeing for voice calls".

The United States had already taken steps to block the company's equipment from mobile networks over security concerns, and Australia and New Zealand have barred the supplier from new 5G networks for the same reason.

Around 32 million people are seeing lost in data services after the O2 network suffered a disruption to service.

In an email to Telecoms.com, Ericsson said it is working with customers to correct the issue, though it did not explicitly confirm or deny whether it was the root case of the problem. They're now working hard to resolve the issue so we would imagine it won't be too long before its back up.

"This remains our priority and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience".

SoftBank said the outages stemmed from problems at exchanges for its high-speed wireless LTE network, while O2 blamed an issue in a third-party supplier's system that was impacting services globally.

O2, which is owned by Spain's Telefonica, said customers of Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and GiffGaff, which all use its network, were also affected by the outage.

"We'd encourage you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can and we are really sorry".
