Turkey seeks arrest of Saudi officials over Khashoggi

  • Senator Bob Corker after being briefed by the CIA

Haspel appeared on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to brief a dozen or so senators on intelligence the CIA had about Khashoggi's death at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey two months ago. He was killed in what USA officials have described as an elaborate plot as he visited the consulate for marriage paperwork. Earlier this year, MIT welcomed the crown prince and his entourage, including a guard linked to the Khashoggi murder, to campus.

Republican Sen. Richard Shelby said he wouldn't rule out supporting the resolution this time when it comes up for a full vote.

MIT specifically has received at least $4 million from Saudi Aramco, the data showed, along with $73 million in private donations from Mohammed Abdul Jameel, a Saudi businessman who graduated from MIT in 1978 and supports research in areas including poverty and education.

A sizable number of senators on both sides of the aisle have rejected the administration's handling of the Khashoggi killing.

The senator said he could not support Saudi Arabia's involvement in the war in Yemen or arms sales to the Saudi government as long as the crown prince remained in power. Graham is quick to defend Pompeo and Mattis, calling them "good soldiers" in his statement, but he throws Trump under the bus. The Crown Prince has to be held responsible for the murder of somebody living in the United States and working as a journalist, but first things first.

On November 20, he said: "It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event - maybe he did and maybe he didn't".

Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution calling for an end to US military aid in the Saudi-led war in Yemen which has found new support in the wave of attention to Khashoggi's death.

Comments by netizens have been largely positive, with many saying this is what they love about NY , and others praising the city's police force.

Corker added that the prince "ordered, monitored, the killing" of the father of four.

Then on Wednesday, an Istanbul court issued the arrest warrants for Assiri and Qahtani on the charge of "deliberately killing (someone) with monstrous feeling or causing torment", according to state news agency Anadolu.

"If he (bin Salman) was in front of a jury he would be convicted in 30 minutes", said Bob Corker, another Republican senator but a Trump critic.

Senators who weren't invited to Tuesday's briefing, including Rand Paul of Kentucky, Chris Murphy of CT and Tim Kaine of Virginia, where Khashoggi lived, said more senators should also get the same briefing.

"Not everything needs to be secret", the Connecticut Democrat tweeted. MIT is among dozens of US universities that accept funding from the Saudi government, but it has stood out for its close relationship with the country's national oil company and other government-owned institutions.

The school began reviewing its relationships with Saudi Arabia in October amid a global uproar over Khashoggi's killing.

Among the options: pull back from U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen; deny any arms sales with Saudi Arabia; slap the crown prince with sanctions, along with a resolution saying the Senate finds him complicit in murder. "So is there something that we can put on top of that that can get more votes".
