U.S. Restaurants and Bars Added Over 20,000 Jobs in November

  • U.S. Department of Labor's November labor report

US employers added 155,000 jobs to their payrolls in November, the Labor Department reported Friday morning, falling short of economists' expectations.

Job gains were apparent in most industries, including significant gains in transportation and warehousing (25,000) and in manufacturing (27,000).

A separate gauge that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time jobs for economic reasons, sometimes called the real unemployment rate, rose from 7.4 percent to 7.6 percent.

Michael Mabry who is chief operating officer at Mooyah, a fast-casual burger chain mostly located the south, says his company has had to raise pay and offer more flexible scheduling to attract new workers.

Among major worker groups, there was little change in November.

Health care employment rose 32,000 last month, adding 328,000 jobs over the year. Average hourly earnings increased 3.1% in November from a year earlier, Friday's report said, only the second time they have climbed that much since the recession ended nine years ago.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 155,000 jobs in November, continuing a historic streak of positive job gains, the BLS employer survey found.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell last month appeared to signal the central bank's three-year tightening cycle was drawing to a close, saying its policy rate was now "just below" estimates of a level that neither cools nor boosts a healthy economy.

"This is still a solid gain that suggests economic growth is gradually slowing back towards its potential pace", said Paul Ashworth, chief economist at Capital Economics in Toronto.

Within healthcare, ambulatory healthcare services showed the most employment growth last month, adding 19,200 jobs. But most analysts anticipate the economy will still grow.

A strong employment report would allay fears about the economy's health and increase the probability of the Fed raising interest rates a couple of times next year.

The leisure and hospitality unemployment rate for the month remained slightly higher than the national average at 5.3 percent, or 729,000 people unemployed.

Policymakers at the Federal Reserve are watching the jobs numbers closely as they prepare for an expected interest rate hike on December 19. Over the year, average hourly earnings have increased by 81 cents.

The housing market, though, has stumbled this year as the Fed's rate hikes have contributed to sharply higher mortgage rates. -China trade war could still intensify, despite an agreement over the weekend between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping that included postponing a planned US tariff hike for 90 days. The Fed in its "Beige Book" report this week said most business contacts in its 12 districts said "that employment growth leaned to the slower side of a modest to moderate pace" because of labor shortages.

Retailers responded by adding 18,200 positions in November, the most in six months.

Despite the tariffs and concerns over trade, manufacturers added 27,000 jobs last month, spread fairly evenly across the sector.

"The outlook for next year is for slower hiring, but not a halt in job creation", Hamrick said.
