  • Actress, Director Penny Marshall Dead At 75

Marshall died in her home in Hollywood Hills on December 17 after suffering from complications from diabetes, TMZ reported on December 18.

In 1988, she became the first woman in Hollywood history to direct a movie that grossed more than $100 million at the box office with Big.

Marshall never again saw the same financial success of Big or A League of Their Own.

Her other directing credits include "Renaissance Man", starring Danny DeVito, Gregory Hines, and Mark Wahlberg in his first feature film role; "The Preacher's Wife", which starred Whitney Houston opposite Denzel Washington and "Riding in Cars with Boys". Then, after she and Cindy Williams guested on a scene-stealing 1975 episode of "Happy Days", their characters were spun off to become mid century Milwaukee's sassiest brewery workers, "Laverne & Shirley".

Though one of three kids born to a show biz family, Marshall's road to success was hardly a smooth or typical trip - starting in an apartment on the Grand Concourse where mum warmed the kids' clothes on the radiator in the winter. According to THR, she died from complications due to diabetes.

To help support her family, Marshall dropped out of the university and took a job as a dance teacher.

Kaprall says the last time he saw Marshall was at an autograph signing in Chicago five years ago with Williams who remains his close friend.

Along with other former sitcom actors Ron Howard and Rob Reiner - the second of whom was her husband in the 1970s - Marshall used her television connections to forge a career as a Hollywood director. Sister Ronny Harlin became a casting director and producer. Her incredibly impressive body of work isn't always acknowledged for being either as successful nor so insightful as it really is.

Penny Marshall attends the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Indiana Pacers on March 5, 2003 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funnybone.

After finding fame as Myrna Turner in The Odd Couple, Penny went on to star in a string of hit TV shows including Happy Days and, of course, Laverne & Shirley, which earned both the actress and her co-star, Cindy Williams, much critical-acclaim. "Watch some old Laverne and Shirley to see why her brother Garry insisted on casting her. Comedy gold, she was".

And so the actress made a decision to step behind the camera, an unlikely career move that provided a successful second act to her career.

But Marshall's legacy will long outlast many of her male peers, and we're truly grateful for the films she gifted to us.

- "Big." "A League of Their Own". Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, for the tale of an all-women baseball league in A League of Their Own.

The first film she directed was Jumpin' Jack Flash in 1986, which featured a cover of the hit Rolling Stones song of the same name performed by the late Aretha Franklin. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends. "She will be missed!" he said in a statement.

During college at the University of New Mexico, Marshall met Michael Henry, whom she married briefly for two years and with whom she had a daughter, Tracy. She also dated singer Art Garfunkel for five years. "Can't describe how I will miss her". She was 75. The Awakenings director had previously been diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in 2009 before going into remission by 2012.
