Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant centuries put India in command in Sydney

  • India vs Australia,Cheteshwar Pujara,18th Test century

Senior batsman Usman Khawaja was also called up after a layoff of almost two years as Australia look to find the formula to turn around a poor run of form in time for their World Cup defence in England later this year.

When Australia bat, they will have a new look opening pair with Usman Khawaja padding up with Marcus Harris after the underperforming Aaron Finch was axed.

An accumulator among swashbucklers in the Indian batting lineup, Pujara's unwavering concentration and solid defence have served him well in Australia where he has been virtually immovable.

Pant and Jadeja were involved in a record 204-run partnership for the seventh wicket. But the moment Pujara got out, Pant took over and started smacking the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground. Pujara went past 150 but failed to score a double-century.

Mitch Marsh was also dropped with Peter Handscomb back to counter India's two spinners - Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

At the other end chirpy wicketkeeper-batsman Pant plundered only his second Test century as he piled more pressure on a wilting Australian attack.

Drugged driver forces vehicle onto Hannover Airport tarmac: German police
Millions fly through the airport, 11km from the city centre, every year but it is not one of the country's major hubs. Police charged that the suspect had tested positive for cocaine and amphetamines, according to local media reports.

Jadeja was finally undone by a tired Lyon who could barely muster a celebration as he knocked the stumps over and Kohli called it a day. But, the unexpected hero was Rishabh Pant who remained not out on 159 which came off just 189 balls with the help of 15 fours and one six.

Shaun Marsh (8) edged Ravindra Jadeja to first slip in a tame dismissal that is nearly certain to cast yet more doubt on his Test prospects going forward, and Labuschagne's first innings at first drop ended three overs later when he clipped off his pads and Ajinkya Rahane took a classic catch at mid-wicket.

In the last few overs, he was looking a bit uncomfortable as the runs weren't coming easily. Australian batsmen need to hold their nerves and bat well in the next three days if they want to draw this match.

India's LBW review against Handscomb might have lost them a review but it woke the umpires up to the poor light conditions.

Most probably Virat Kohli will retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Seamer Peter Siddle has been recalled to Australia's one-day worldwide squad for the upcoming three-match series against India after an absence of more than eight years.
