FBI Investigated Whether Trump Was National Security Threat Working for Russian Federation

The FBI opened an investigation into President Donald Trump to determine whether he was a secret Russian agent in the days after he fired FBI Director James Comey, a new report has claimed.

FBI agents were "alarmed" by Trump's behavior and made a decision to investigate whether the president "was knowingly working for Russian Federation or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow's influence", the Times said, citing former intelligence agents and others familiar with the investigation.

The revelation, marking the first time a U.S. president has been investigated by his own intelligence services for acting for a foreign power against American interests, comes as the 18-month inquiry by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election nears its conclusion.

According to the Times report, the inquiry was ultimately handed over to Robert Mueller. "We are going to learn that Donald Trump is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vladimir Putin", said former USA counterterrorism agent Malcolm Nance.

The Hill noted that until Giuliani's comments, speculation had centered on whether the White House might push back on some of Mueller's eventual report by citing executive privilege.

The Times reports that FBI agents and some top officials became suspicious of Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign but didn't launch an investigation at that time because they weren't sure how to approach such a sensitive and important probe, according to the sources. The deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, appointed Mueller soon after Comey's firing in May 2017 to lead the investigation.

He maintained Mueller's investigators should first give the report to Trump's lawyers for review. But, added to everything already known about contacts between Trump associates and Russian individuals - all of which were initially denied - this raises multiple red flags.

The probe was meant to test whether the firing of Comey was something that could be considered a national security threat, according to the report.

Also fueling the FBI's concerns was Christopher Steele's "dirty dossier" of unsubstantiated allegations, which had been funded by Democrats but at that point was justifying probes across the Justice Department.

In a statement Friday night, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called the Times story "absurd".

"I acknowledge that", Giuliani said.

She went on to say that Trump has "actually been tough on Russian Federation", unlike former president Barack Obama.
