Manafort Suffering From Depression, Anxiety Due to Conditions in Jail - Filing
10 January, 2019, 23:46 | Author: Sue Mclaughlin
Although the filing does not say whether the polling information was public or what was done with it, it raises the possibility that Russian Federation might have used inside information from the campaign as part of its effort to interfere with the election on US President Donald Trump's behalf.
Those areas included the polling data as well as a meeting in Madrid and discussions of a Ukrainian peace plan. There, it was revealed authorities believe Manafort lied about handing 2016 polling data to Konstantin Kilimnik, a translator and business associate that Mueller has connected to Russian intelligence.
Konstantin Kilimnik, is a Russian-Ukrainian political consultant and is suspected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as being a Russian intelligence operative.
Manafort's lawyers wrote in an improperly redacted portion of the brief that prosecutors said he lied about "sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign". The Mueller teamaccused him in November of breaking that deal by lying to investigators.
"These occurrences happened during a period when Mr. Manafort was managing a US presidential campaign", they wrote.
Manafort says he did not intentionally mislead Mueller.
The filing was made in response to special counsel Robert Mueller's claims that Manafort lied to investigators.
Manafort is held in solitary confinement in prison, his lawyers noted, although they agreed it was for his own safety to be kept apart from the general prison population.
It showed that Mueller had questioned Manafort on his discussions with Kilimnik in 2016 on a possible peace plan for Ukraine - where the two had worked together several years earlier for a pro-Russia political party.
According to The Times, Manafort and Rick Gates, his former business partner and campaign deputy, provided the information in spring 2016, around the time Trump clinched the GOP nomination.
Manafort's filing also acknowledges he met with Kilimnik in Madrid.

In his rebuttal to the special counsel's claims of dishonesty, Manafort exposed details of the dispute, much of which centers on his relationship with Kilimnik.
The special counsel's office declined to comment Tuesday.
"The defense contests the government's conclusion [that Manafort lied] and contends that any alleged misstatements, to the extent they occurred at all, were not intentional", his lawyers said.
The lawyers disputed any improper outreach to the Trump administration. Manafort denies colluding with any Russians.
The filing says that a May 26, 2018, text message exchange with Manafort involved an unidentified "third-party" who was asking permission to name-drop Manafort if the person met with Trump.
Kilimnik has not entered a plea in U.S. courts, and Manafort has pleaded guilty to the witness tampering allegation and has been convicted on several lobbying-related financial crimes. Manafort is suffering from depression and anxiety and is at times confined to a wheelchair because of gout.
Prosecutors said Manafort also lied about the circumstances of a $125,000 wire transfer in 2017.
Manafort agreed to cooperate with Mueller when he admitted to two conspiracy counts in Washington on September 14, a month after jurors convicted him in Virginia of tax and bank fraud. By pleading guilty, Manafort avoided a second trial on charges that he failed to disclose lobbying on behalf of the Ukrainian government, and that he laundered money.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson has ordered the government to provide a detailed factual basis about Manafort's lies, which is due January 14.
