Guernsey Police posted on Twitter on Tuesday morning that the search had resumed at 8am but that there was still no trace of the plane.

An air and sea search has been launched and rescue teams have been scrambled to waters north of the Channel Island.

Fears were elevated when Cardiff Airport confirmed the aircraft was due to arrive from Nantes but had not, with a spokeswoman claiming that there were no further details.

"We have found no signs of those on board", it said on Twitter.

But in a message to ESPN FC, he echoed the Guernsey police statement that the debris found could not yet be confirmed as parts of Sala's plane.

John Fitzgerald, the chief executive of Channel Islands Air Search, suggested that the search was no longer a rescue mission, according to reports.

"I think you could see the happiness in his face, one of the best days of his life as he expressed".

Mr Choo said the Premier League club had called off training on Tuesday morning, adding: "The thoughts of the squad, management staff and the entire club with Emiliano and the pilot".

Sala signed for Cardiff City on Saturday after joining the club from Nantes for £15million.

On passing Guernsey it "requested descent", but Jersey air traffic control lost contact with the plane while it was flying at 2,300ft.

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman said the club was "very concerned" by news of the plane's disappearance.

Cardiff City, who signed the Argentine striker from Nantes for an undisclosed club record fee last week, had told the media that they are "seeking clarification" on the situation.

Meanwhile, Juventus player Cristiano Ronaldo has come under fire for showing off a picture of himself smiling on a plane just hours after news broke of the missing aircraft.

"I was devastated to hear the news", the Italian said on Tuesday.

He had played in France since 2012.

He added: "All of us at Cardiff City FC would like to thank our fans, and the entire footballing family for their support at this hard time".

"Tomorrow, we will start and in the afternoon I start training with my new team".

In Progreso, Sala's hometown, the president of the soccer club where the forward began his career told The Associated Press that these are "difficult hours" for all the locals.

Sala tweeted a photo of himself and his now-former FC Nantes teammates over the weekend, captioned with "The last goodbye".

Sala had been in Cardiff last week to sign the transfer, which was waiting for worldwide clearance.
