And I very much appreciate the effort that folks here in Iowa put into helping us determine the direction our country will take from here. In all, more than 1,000 people packed into the venue and spilled into an overflow area.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is kicking off her presidential run this weekend with a swing through the early voting state of Iowa.

If there's a message from the vibrant crowds, it's that Iowa Democrats are far from tired of an impending 2020 campaign, despite a bruising midterm election fight. "Is this going to be a Democratic primary that truly is a grassroots movement, that is funded by the grassroots, that's done with grassroots volunteers?"

Warren, who has long since claimed to be part Cherokee based on little evidence other than a racist stereotype about Native Americans having "high cheekbones" and a family cookbook titled "Pow Wow Chow", is less than 1/1,024 Native American by scientific consensus, based on an analysis of her DNA - and even that is questionable. "I just want to know whoever we nominate is strong". "After a couple of years of Trump, we're ready to just say what we believe".

The turnouts were typical for Warren's three-day tour - where potential caucus-goers poured in to each of Warren's events. "I'm going to stay focused on that all the way through".

"I think that campaigns should not be for sale", she said.

The trip is an early test for the Massachusetts Democrat's growing political operation, which unveiled a slate of touted hires this week, and a candidate determined to show that her populist economic message can conjure up excitement for her campaign in Iowa's traditional proving grounds.

KHALID: But even if voters, including Leggio, can not agree on exactly what this idea of electability means, they point to a common trait - authenticity, someone who just feels real, whether or not that alienates people.

He likes a lot of the issues Warren stands for, but is concerned about whether she can build bipartisan bridges.

"The energy here has just been awesome", said Rob Gilmer of Council Bluffs, among those who stood outside to hear Warren's remarks. The test indicated that Warren likely had Native American in her bloodline, though the ancestor probably lived six to 10 generations ago. She was afraid Warren might come off as angry, but "that's not anger, that's passion". Who that candidate will be, Continetti, concluded, "we have yet to see". But he thinks that path to victory is tied to how genuine a candidate seems, regardless of whether that turns off some people.

"I am looking for somebody with broad appeal so we can pull in some of the independents and the Republicans", said Jean McGinnis, 49, as she waited in line to get a photo taken with Warren after a rally in Sioux City.

"That usually doesn't happen".

She also signalled a potential point of conflict within the Democratic primary field, suggesting billionaire candidates would not represent the party well if they used their personal wealth to help finance their campaigns.

Warren became emotional as she described her frustration at witnessing the Trump administration's border security policies. "I'd love to run against her".
