Support For Border Wall Jumps As More Americans Blame Trump For Shutdown

  • US President Donald Trump and others listen to a prayer during a meeting about border security in the Cabinet Room of the White House

Later Saturday, he supplemented a day's worth of tweets by telephoning in to Fox News Channel's "Justice with Judge Jeanine" Pirro from the White House to continue his public relations blitz for the wall. Trump has said he'll sign it.

The meeting came as a partial government shutdown caused by a budget impasse over the border wall entered a record-setting fourth week.

He said Mr Trump should, as threatened, declare a national emergency to seek funding for his border wall with Mexico if the reopening failed to sway the Democrats.

"[Schumer] and Pelosi were so bad the other night that the president ought to pay them to go on TV once a week", Gingrich, the former GOP House Speaker, told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y., pointing to the Democratic response to President Trump's Oval Office address on border wall funding.

The shutdown has affected the work of nine cabinet departments and various smaller agencies - affecting 800,000 workers who have not been paid since 22 December.

Mr Trump told Pirro he had not left the White House in months except for recent trips to Iraq and Germany and was "ready, willing and able to get a deal done".

The increase in support is sharpest among Republicans, whose backing for Trump's long-standing campaign promise jumped 16 points in the past year, from 71 percent to 87 percent.

The poll finds that 42 percent of Democrats who oppose the wall say congressional Democrats should refuse to budge even if it extends the shutdown; 37 percent say they should compromise with Trump. Airport officials said they plan to do the same yesterday and today out of concerns that they would not have enough employees to operate all the security checkpoints. Senator Tim Kaine called the wall, which could cost an estimated $23 billion, a "vanity project" that Trump promised Mexico - not U.S. taxpayers - would pay for.

The bad news is Mack Brown has to face a program that is better still than Florida State was in his first stint in Chapel Hill. Tigers freshman quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, won offensive MVP, finishing with 20-32, 347 yards, three touchdowns.

The government shutdown is now the longest in American history, with no apparent end in sight. Democrats voted in the past for border security and should again, he said.

Democrats oppose an emergency declaration but may be powerless to block it.

Johnson said he was planning to introduce a bill Monday and hopes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will bring it onto the floor, and that it will eventually have the support of both Democrats and the President.

"I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

Some Trump allies have been encouraging him to declare a national emergency and redirect other funds to begin building the wall. "Just give in. He's not going to give in", Graham said.

Trump has told advisers he believes the fight for the wall, even if he never gets money for it, is a political win for him.

Trump says in a Fox News Channel interview that he has "no idea" whether he can get a deal with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Milstead said a barrier of steel slats that border agents can see through and animals and waters can pass through - much like what exists at the border now - could work.

Many furloughed federal employees have taken to the streets to protest their situation. While more unaccompanied children and families have recently come to the border, the total number of illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico is historically low.
