In an interview on "Fox News Sunday", Vice President Mike Pence reiterated that Trump's proposal "is not amnesty" because "there's no pathway to citizenship".
Democrats were proposing $563 million to hire 75 more immigration judges, who now face large backlogs processing cases, and $524 million to improve ports of entry in Calexico, California, and San Luis, Arizona, the Democratic House aide said.
"There's no permanent status here at all, which is what amnesty contemplates", Pence said.
Mr. Pence brushed aside those complaints, saying he thought they'd been written "before the speech was made", and he urged Democrats to take a new look at what Mr. Trump laid out.
While polls show more Americans blame Trump and the Republicans than the Democrats, both sides are feeling pressure, as disgust rises across the country with the paralyzed political leadership in Washington.
Top Democrats soundly rejected the offer before Trump made the announcement, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling it a "non-starter".
In exchange, the President wants $5.7 Billion to build a barrier at our southern border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration, drugs, and criminals from coming in.
In exchange for the almost $6 billion Trump has sought for border wall funding, the president offered Democrats a three-year protections extension for 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. "Third, I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues", Durbin said. So far, the House has approved seven of those bills, with a re-vote scheduled for the eighth bill on Tuesday that is expected to pass.
Chuck Schumer (D-NY) of refusing to come to the bargaining table to end an ongoing partial government shutdown, which will cross the one-month mark this week.
Pelosi said the offer was a "non-starter" that did "not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people's lives". But Trump did not budge on his $5.7 billion demand for the wall and, in essence, offered to temporarily roll-back some of his own hawkish immigration actions - actions that have been blocked by federal courts.

Gillibrand held some similar positions to Trump on immigration in 2008, when she said she was a "firm opponent" of giving amnesty to undocumented immigrants and called for English to be the official language of the United States.
The White House has billed Trump's plan as an attempt to end the shutdown.
While the original idea had been to include protections for as many as 1.8 million immigrants eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the Obama-era program known as DACA that protected those illegally brought to the United States as children, Trump ultimately proposed shielding only the 700,000 who are enrolled.
Trump's Friday evening tweeted announcement came after Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday canceled her plans to travel by commercial plane to visit US troops in Afghanistan, saying Trump had caused a security risk by talking about the trip.
About a quarter of the US government has been partially shut down since December 22, as funding has expired for reasons mostly unrelated to the border or immigration.
But Clyburn said Trump should first agree to open the government to give lawmakers several weeks to negotiate a deal that would include more money for a wall on the southern USA border.
The money includes port security measures as well funding for immigration judges who could help with cases of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border seeking asylum, the source told CNN.
President Donald Trump says he'll be making a "major announcement" on the government shutdown and the southern border on Saturday afternoon as the standstill over his border wall continues into its fifth week.
In the speech, Trump said that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will bring the announced deal before the Senate floor this upcoming week.
"It was the President who singled-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place - offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking", Schumer said in a statement. It noted that the administration has put "millions of once protected immigrants in danger" with its attacks on TPS and DACA, and argued that the White House should instead move to create permanent protections for those groups and end the disastrous shutdown immediately.
