She repeated that resolve during a noisy Prime Minister's Question Time in the House of Commons, telling the main opposition leader, Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, and other MPs that the best way to avert a no-deal Brexit was to vote for her deal.

The blow to the Prime Minister came less than a day after Conservative rebels defied the orders of their party to push through an amendment created to frustrate a no-deal Brexit.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, he said: "No 10 is trying to give the impression that no deal remains possible but, after many years of knowing the Prime Minister, I do not believe that she would willingly take Britain out of the European Union without a deal".

Mr Clark is widely seen, along with Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, as one of the senior ministers most strongly opposed to a no-deal.

Lawmakers voted 308-297 on Wednesday in favour of demanding the government come up with an alternative plan within three working days after the January 15 vote, rather than a planned 21-day limit.

Jeremy Hunt said parliament would "try very hard to rule out" a no-deal divorce with the European Union and leave the United Kingdom in "paralysis".

May told lawmakers that parliament had a choice: back her or risk Britain leaving the bloc without a deal - a scenario many businesses say would splinter supply chains and hamper investment in the world's fifth largest economy.

"It is my strong view that we need to come together now, we need to act to avoid no-deal because I don't think there is anything remotely like a majority in parliament that will tolerate it", he said.

He said such an election was his priority over discussions of a second Brexit referendum.

Today in a keynote speech to Labour members in Yorkshire, Jeremy Corbyn will say the most practical and democratic way to "break the deadlock" at Westminster over Brexit is to hold another general election.

The Prime Minister has scheduled the vote for her meaningful vote on Tuesday.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire People's Vote campaign will be taking their message to the streets of Nottingham in a National Day of Action on Saturday (12th January).

His decision to allow a vote on the amendment forcing the PM to set out her plans earlier than expected drew furious derision from a swathe of Tory MPs, some of whom directed cries of "pathetic" and "nonsense" at him.

Alongside the Remain-backing former attorney general in the Aye lobby were former ministers Nick Boles, Kenneth Clarke, Jonathan Djanogly, Justine Greening, Sam Gyimah, Jo Johnson, Phillip Lee, Sir Oliver Letwin, Nicky Morgan, Bob Neill, Anna Soubry and Ed Vaizey as well as Heidi Allen, Antoinette Sandbach and Sarah Wollaston and Brexit-backing Andrew Mitchell.

Critics of the backstop argue it could tie the United Kingdom into the EU's orbit indefinitely.

"I've been in contact with European leaders. about MPs' concerns", she said.

"Rather than increasing the likelihood of a "no deal" outcome, we expect either the deal to scrape through, owing to last minute concessions to the key Brexit groups, or if parliament forces the government to adopt a different or more market positive Brexit stance", says Rochester.

"The amendment doesn't affect the normal operations of the Treasury. but it does make it harder for the government to drift into no deal without parliament being able to direct it", Yvette Cooper, the MP who introduced the amendment, told the Guardian.
