Apple in talks to create "Netflix for news" subscription service

  • HBO and Netflix reportedly shun Apple's video streaming service

The deal would offer some outlets significantly less than they make through their own subscription services today; The Wall Street Journal charges more than $20 a month for various digital subscriptions, for example.

Now, it looks like Apple will show off its video subscription platform for the first time at the event, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The news comes shortly after The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has run into resistance from news publishers over a proposed revenue split that would see Apple pocket 50%. The new iPad mini 5 and the iPad 7 are expected to launch side by side with varying prices, and they will retain the Touch ID security feature instead of the more advanced Face ID. Apple's TV app now can't see any content from Netflix, and it sounds like Netflix won't integrate with Apple's new service as well. Since Apple announced in November that it would no longer break out iPhone sales in its quarterly earnings reports, investors will likely be looking to the growth of its services business moving forward, which reached an all-time high of $10 billion (R137.4 billion) during the holiday quarter.

Did you know we have a YouTube Channel? Paid subscriptions though the iOS news app could roll out as early as March 25.

It's the season of video streaming, as important companies announced or plan to launch such services in the coming months.

Kickoffs have been completely taken out of the game and scrimmage will start from each team's own 25-yard line. Sports TV Ratings said the first game on CBS ‏averaged 2.913 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

More information from the website states that pre-orders for the AirPods 2, AirPower and new iPads will start on Friday, March 22, with the devices officially available starting March 29.

Regardless of how all this revenue-sharing works out, it sounds like Apple's video service will be integrated into the existing TV app on Apple TV and iOS devices.

Apple, CBS, HBO, Starz and Viacom declined to comment.

As for the original programming Apple has been working on, some of the projects in the works include a revamp of the 1980s hit Amazing Stories, a new comedy series from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, and projects from La La Land creator Damien Chazelle.
