  • UK recognises Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela

The coordinated recognition by a flood of European Union nations including Britain, Germany, France and Spain followed the expiration of an ultimatum for Maduro to call a new presidential election, aligning them with Washington and against Russian Federation and China.

However, he supported plans for a meeting of Latin American and European Union states in a "Contact Group" meeting in Montevideo next Thursday.

China: Venezuela's biggest creditor, with some $20 billion dollars owed, says it opposes "external interference" by those who have recognized Guaido as leader.

"The Bolivarian republic of Venezuela expresses its most energetic rejection of the decision by some European governments, which officially submit to the strategy of the USA administration to topple the government", Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, tweeted.

Guaido is trying to force from power the socialist leader - labelled a dictator by the West and his Latin American neighbors after presiding over Venezuela's economic collapse - aiming to set up a transitional government and hold new presidential elections.

A total of 13 European nations had joined in solidarity with Guaido, recognising him as president.

President Maduro, 56, a former union leader, bus driver and foreign minister, replaced ex-president Hugo Chavez in 2013 after his death from cancer.

The 35-year-old Guaido, accused by Maduro's government of staging a USA -directed coup, has galvanized Venezuela's opposition with a hopeful message.

Seven EU states had given Maduro a Sunday deadline to call presidential elections or they would recognize Guaido.

"Soldiers, we continue to wait for you".

Over the weekend, he called on the army to allow in humanitarian aid from the United States via neighboring Colombia and Brazil.

Juan Guaido, Venezuelan opposition leader and parliament speaker, whose appointment to that position had been cancelled by the country's Supreme Court, declared himself interim president at a rally in the country's capital of Caracas on January 23. Critics have called that election a sham and the mainstream opposition boycotted it.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a visit to Japan that Guaido "is the legitimate interim president".

"I sent a letter to Pope Francis, I hope it is on his way or that it has already arrived in Rome, at the Vatican", Mr.

President Maduro has rejected offers of aid from the USA, having told his supporters on Saturday that Venezuela was not "a country of beggars".

About 50 protesters showed up at the Lima Group's closing news conference to denounce Canada's moves so far. The United States wants Maduro gone, as do other key Western nations.

Guaido, who heads the opposition-controlled National Assembly, addressed the gathering in a video message, saying he looked forward to having "free and fair elections as soon as possible in order to restore democracy to Venezuela". He added that "no one imposes an ultimatum on Venezuela".

Palacek, like numerous protesters, said he doesn't blame Maduro or his predecessor Hugo Chavez for the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

The global split over Venezuela has left the United Nations in a quandary and Guterres' comments suggested that the world body would remain on the sidelines for now.

But David Lipton, the No. 2 at the International Monetary Fund, called Venezuela's economic crisis - marked by widespread food shortages, protracted hyperinflation and the loss of human capital through emigration - an "unprecedented economic storm" that will required generous, broad-based international support to overcome.
