A grand jury in New York City found Mexican drug cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman guilty on all counts; setting the stage for a high-stakes sentencing hearing that could send the global criminal to prison for the rest of his life.

Accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is seen with a handgun on display during a testimony by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent Victor Vazquez (not shown) in this courtroom sketch in Brooklyn federal court in New York City on January 17, 2019.

Law enforcement officials said that he'll be looking at a mandatory life sentence without parole.

Guzman, whose nickname means "Shorty", was extradited to the United States for trial in 2017 after he was arrested in Mexico the year before.

Guzman, who has been held in solitary confinement for the last two years, pleaded not guilty to the slew of charges, thus beginning his long-waited criminal trial in November.

The worldwide notoriety of Guzman was boosted by two escapes from Mexican custody, one in 2001 and another one in 2015 - through a 1.5km underground tunnel large enough to ride a motorcycle.

He then also expressed his views on Higuain and said " Chelsea is not about Higuain and Hazard, it is about 25 players".

USA prosecutors told the jury how he had trafficked tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine into the United States in crimes spanning more than two decades.

Jurors were tasked with making 53 decisions about whether prosecutors had proven different elements of the case.

Mr Peña Nieto denied it, but the allegation fit a theme: politicians, army commanders, police and prosecutors, all on the take. The same day, he grinned broadly at audience member Alejandro Edda, the Mexican actor who plays Guzman in the Netflix drama "Narcos". "He left us behind".

The drug boss escaped from prison twice - once in 2001 by hiding in a laundry bin, and again in 2014 when he escaped through tunnels on a specially adapted small motorcycle. He then got an escort from crooked police officers into Mexico City before retreating to one of his many mountainside hideaways.

In 2015, he pulled off another jail break, escaping a maximum-security prison through a 10-metre deep tunnel.

"Why? Because he is guilty and he never wanted to be in a position where he would have to answer for his crimes", she told the jury. "In front of you".
