Katy Perry Pulls ‘Blackface’ Shoes From Retailers

The backlash isn't without warning, as Perry was already criticised for the shoes when she first shared a design on Instagram in August 2018.

The shoes are called the "Rue Face Slip On Loafers" and another style that has a heel is called "Ora Face Block Heel Sandal". According to its website, the shoes in the line are "inspired by Katy's travels, humor and extraordinary imagination" and are "designed 100% by Katy Perry".

Gucci, meanwhile, stopped selling a black sweater last week because it partially covers the wearer's face, which prompted some to claim it too closely resembled blackface.

Perry has yet to comment on the controversy, but she is reportedly pulling the shoes from sale.

The singer's line of sandal and loafers were pulled from stores including Walmart after critics argued against its similarity to Blackface characters. The designs both featured eyes, a nose and lips on them.

Kickoffs have been completely taken out of the game and scrimmage will start from each team's own 25-yard line. Sports TV Ratings said the first game on CBS ‏averaged 2.913 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Perry is the latest in a string of fashion designers who have been attacked for manufacturing apparel, footwear or accessories that many consumers say is reminiscent of "blackface".

"Our intention was never to inflict any pain", she said in a joint statement with Global Brands Group. "Reaching" or not, information is too readily accessible for this to occur.

Designs that resemble racism in any way, intentional or not, should not be taken lightly - especially today. Perry issued a public apology, which is always good, but the effects of a racism scandal don't go away overnight.

"Off the back of that they're going to get more traffic to their website and make more sales".
