McConnell says Senate will vote on Democrats’ ‘Green New Deal’

  • U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez waves to the crowd after speaking at Women's Unity Rally in Lower Manhattan in New York. Democrats including Ocasio Cortez of New York and veteran Sen. Ed Markey of Mass.

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal, and we're going to be voting on that in the Senate", McConnell said at a Senate Republican news conference. Ed Markey, D-Mass., unveiled the "Green New Deal" framework last week.

"Republicans don't want to debate climate change, they only want to deny it", Markey said in responding to McConnell. They've offered a non-binding resolution meant to set the tone for legislation addressing climate change and economic inequality.

At a rally Monday night in El Paso, Trump mocked the Green New Deal, saying, "It sounds like a high school term paper that got a low mark". Edward Markey (D-Mass.) introduced the Green New Deal, a resolution calling for a massive, government-driven overhaul of the US economy in order to address climate change, Markey tweeted that the plan's "transformative legislative goals are what is needed to address the generational challenge of climate change". Still, from the support it's received among 2020 hopefuls, it appears that the Green New Deal will be a serious factor in the primary - as a talking point, if not policy proposal. McConnell's plan to ask Markey and his fellow senators to vote on the resolution they endorsed was a "Republican trick".

When confronted with the multi-billion-dollar price tag most experts place on the proposal, its allies have argued that climate change is an existential threat that necessitates a national mobilization effort unseen since World World War II.

"Don't let Mitch McConnell fool you: this is nothing but an attempt to sabotage the movement we are building".

Sure, McConnell may have been trying to put Democrats on the spot, but if the latter is so adamant about their Green New Deal, why wouldn't they be celebrating and jumping at the chance to vote on it?

They knew early. & Their goal has been to sow doubt this entire time.

With hundreds of civilians fleeing this week before the SDF assault, it is unclear how many people remained in the town Saturday. The Syrian government has said that the areas controlled by the Kurds would eventually revert to government control.

"But McConnell is hoping to put Democrats in an uncomfortable political position with this vote, especially since the Green New Deal's rollout has already been marred by mistakes and mixed messages".

Noting his own state's mix of fossil fuels and renewables, Cramer said he's anxious to explore some energy deals with Democrats. The Senate vote will test how far left those candidates are willing to go, risking leaving moderate voters behind.

The resolution submitted to the House and Senate makes no mention of cows or air travel. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders co-sponsored the deal but has not said definitively whether he will run in 2020. The Senate will vote on new climate change legislation known as the Green New Deal, McConnell told reporters.

The deal is gaining popularity in the House, where more than 15 percent of representatives have signed on as sponsors.

Many also praised "Cocaine Mitch" for forcing Senate Democrats to be on the record in support for the progressive resolution.

"The resolution will surely be opposed by some Democratic centrists", he concluded. An outdated and since taken down FAQ on AOC's website confused things by promising economic security for those "unwilling to work".
