"This is a special place for me".

He will return to Pebble Beach in June for the U.S. Open, where he made his pro debut in 1992.

Whether it was continuing to be a part of U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, finding a new workout routine, changing coaches, discovering a healthier diet, befriending - and needling - tour players who are young enough to be his son, Mickelson did his best to stay young.

Mickelson, who started the final round three shots behind, never came close to a bogey and built a three-shot lead through 16 holes Sunday night when it became too dark to finish, no matter how hard he lobbied to keep going.

What excites him is that he's putting as well as he has at any time in his career and has found an extra "5-6 miles per hour swing speed" he believes that could be the key at the Masters, even if he conceded that winning 50 times on the PGA Tour might prove a challenge. "Let's play 17 and see how it goes".

Mickelson had to return to Pebble Beach on Monday to complete his 44th Tour victory and did so easily, finishing at 19-under par with a 65.

A dream? Perhaps. But you can bet Mickelson sees such a scenario playing out clear as day.

With a two-hour rain delay in Sunday's final round, Day was one of the last groups to finish before sunset and carded a four-under-par 68.

Hail covered the second green at Pebble Beach for a time Sunday.

@PhilMickelson is a 44-time victor on the PGA TOUR.

Red-hot Mickelson and Casey had opposing views on whether to continue as darkness fell, Mickelson putting out for a par at the 16th and saying he was ready to head to 17 as Casey opted to call it a day with a three-foot putt for par in front of him.

'Sometimes I get in my own bubble, ' Mickelson said. But he said he understood Casey's perspective.

His brilliant play still shared the stage with weather that was freakish even by Pebble standards.

Asked in a greenside interview what the performance did for his confidence, Mickelson said: "Absolutely nothing, because it's nothing like the course we'll see".

Now with consecutive runner-up finishes in his last two starts this year, he's entering the Genesis Open with significant momentum.

"The rough will be so different and the greens so firm it will be a whole different golf course but I'll deal with that in six months".

His path to victory these days is never going to be mundane, even in a tournament where he went an entire round without missing a fairway - a 20-year first.
