Senate passes amendment rebuking Trump’s Syria withdrawal plan

  • Mitch Mc Connell reveals that the Republican party is fundamentally opposed to democracy

In morning tweets, Trump said that the moves were consistent with a campaign promise to withdraw from "Endless Wars" that have resulted in "unlimited spending and death" and argued that under his leadership the Islamic State had been all but destroyed.

The President, however, has stated that it was necessary as the lives of numerous troops were at risk and that the amount of money spent so far on the war is way too much.

US officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, have said Trump is in the "process of evaluating" whether to withdraw some troops from Afghanistan, where they have been since 2001.

The amendment acknowledges progress against ISIL and al-Qaeda in Syria and Afghanistan but warns that "a precipitous withdrawal" without effective efforts to secure gains could destabilize the region and create a vacuum that could be filled by Iran or Russian Federation.

Trump's statement came a day after the Senate republicans-backed majority leader Mitch McConnell voted on Thursday for an amendment in a bid to reserve Trump's order to pull out the USA forces from the Syrian region, also a check over the future plans to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. "Certain people must get smart!"

On Tuesday the top United States intelligence chief said that the Daesh group still has "thousands" of fighters that it can rebuild into a cohesive force in any vacuum left in the war-torn country.

Al Jazeera reported on Thursday that the resolution calls on the Trump administration to conduct a review of the military and diplomatic strategies in Syria and Afghanistan and to set conditions for the long-term defeat of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS).

Republicans spent years accusing Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, of pursuing capricious troop withdrawals and have refused to defend Trump's efforts to do the same.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, in a televised address on January 28, stated that all foreign forces would leave the country once they had defeated the terror groups operating in the region and were needed no longer anymore.
