Townsville flood victims eligible for $1000 in Commonwealth relief

WITH more than a metre of rain having fallen in Townsville in seven days, weather experts are warning the severe weather is still to come, with heavy rain and the chance of tornadoes.
But she also expressed simmering frustration amid complaints from some residents that they were caught out by record water releases from the city's Ross River Dam.
Up to 20,000 homes are at risk of being inundated if the rains continue, officials said. We've continued to see intense and significant rainfall through northern parts of Queensland-especially around the coastal areas just northwest of Townsville, where we saw over 300 mm to 9 am this morning.
According to CNN affiliate 9 News, supermarket shelves across the region are almost empty, with chains struggling to restock after Townsville Airport was closed and many major roads cut. There's more water coming, make steps to keep yourself safe.
"But it's going to stay around Townsville until at least Wednesday".
9 News reported Monday that entire suburbs of Townsville were completely submerged.
"Crocodiles may be seen crossing roads, and when flooding recedes, crocodiles can turn up in unusual places such as farm dams or waterholes where they have not been seen before", Queensland Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said in a statement.
Locals are being advised to move to higher ground as the flood continues.
That order sparked warnings that 21 suburbs could see flash flooding, including high velocity flows that could kill people.
"The monsoon trough is near stationery which is why we're getting persistent heavy showers affecting many areas, it's particularly of interest in Herbert catchment, Upper Burdekin, Haughton and Ross River catchments", Mr Gunn said.
Devastating flooding in northeast Australia has forced thousands of people from their homes and brought snakes and crocodiles onto the streets as authorities warn of strong winds and more rain on the way.
