Trump indicated that to secure funding for a wall on the border with Mexico, he will declare a national emergency on 15 February, the deadline for funding talks initiated after the 35-day shutdown, the longest in United States history.

"We will be looking at a national emergency because I don't think anything's going to happen", Trump said.

The prospect of Trump using a national emergency declaration to build his wall has divided Republicans, with a number of them expressing concerns about the precedent that such a move would set.

Trump told CBS News" "Face the Nation' programme that the ongoing negotiations with the opposition Democrats over border security are a waste of time.

"Well, we have very strong legal standing", Trump told reporters hours before he is slated to make his first visit to his South Florida resort since Thanksgiving weekend. "It's going to be part of their campaign, but I don't think it's good politically", Trump said about the Democrats on the committee. "People that didn't have any idea - they didn't have a clue as to what was happening, they now know exactly what's happening". It's that alternative. It's national emergency, it's other things and you know there have been plenty national emergencies called. " Schumer added: "We can secure our border without an expensive, ineffective wall". The decision unilaterally to end the longest and most costly shutdown in government history was greeted with relief, but it has led to criticism from Trump's own supporters that he "caved in". "It's being built, some of it's already been completed, in San Diego, if you look, it's been completed", Trump said. "I don't think Democrats want border security". "She wanted to win a political point".

In response, Drew Hammill, a Pelosi spokesman, said in a statement on Friday night that "President Trump's recklessness didn't make us safer, it undermined our security with 35 days of border patrol agents, DEA agents, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and Homeland Security personnel missing paychecks".

"Excuse me?" Trump asked.

"She's costing the country hundreds of billions of dollars because what's happening is when you have a porous border, and when you have drugs pouring in, and when you have people dying all over the country because of people like Nancy Pelosi who don't want to give proper border security for political reasons, she's doing a awful disservice to our country", he said.

In the event focused on human trafficking, the president made the case that building a southern border wall would cause human trafficking to go down by a "tremendous percentage", making the case that human trafficking is hard to pull off at legal points of entry. You need a wall.
