  • May urges U.K. legislators to allow more time to get Brexit deal

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said Sunday that parliament would get another chance to pass judgment on May's Brexit plan "by no later than February 27".

In response to Mr Corbyn's letter, Mrs May said she looked forward to Conservative and Labour teams meeting soon to consider "alternative arrangements" to the Northern Ireland backstop.

"He's unclear as to whether he also wants to stop free movement, and of course the EU's view would be, 'well, if you're in the customs union then you have free movement and you abide by the common external tariff".

Mrs Leadsom said there was "no chance" Mrs May would adopt Mr Corbyn's "view of the world", adding: 'The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear we're leaving the EU, we're leaving the customs union, we're leaving the single market'.

Liam Fox, the worldwide trade secretary, who signed the Swiss accord in Berne on Monday with a Swiss federal councillor, Guy Parmelin, said the deal was of "huge economic importance" to Britain and would benefit 15,000 United Kingdom exporters.

"It is very clear from the European Union that non-EU members do not have a say in EU trade policy so to pretend that you could do so is a unsafe delusion".

The Department for International Trade said the agreement would maintain UK-Swiss trade under the preferential terms now available to both countries through an European Union free trade deal.

"I think that you would need to have a time limit".

That might mean that she's back before the end of this month with something concrete to vote on.

However, BBC political correspondent Iain Watson said it appears there are some potential stumbling blocks to a deal. 'They will just try to trap Theresa May.

His comments were echoed by former Conservative chairman Grant Shapps who tweeted: "No point winning Labour MPs, by losing Tories!"

"I'm certain of one thing, is that it's not going to be as good as if they had not been Brexit, that is for sure", Lagarde said.

He said "there needs to be a day when Parliament says that's it, enough is enough".

Elsewhere Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay was said to have held "constructive" talks on Monday night with the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels.

Mr Barclay and Mr Barnier had agreed to further talks "in the coming days", a statement from the Department for Exiting the European Union said.

She told Mr Corbyn: "It is good to see that we agree that the United Kingdom should leave the European Union with a deal and that the urgent task at hand is to find a deal that honours our commitments to the people of Northern Ireland, can command support in Parliament and can be negotiated with the EU - not to seek an election or second referendum".

She said the government needed to "get serious" about policy on a customs union and guarantee to "legislate for the protections around workers' rights".

Meanwhile Mrs May welcomed the Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, to Downing Street for talks on Monday evening.
