  • Anti-vaxers blamed for astonishing rise of Measles in 2018 – UNICEF

Ukraine, Philippines and Brazil saw the largest increases.

UNICEF says poor public health infrastructure, civil strife, low community awareness, and vaccine hesitancy have all played a role in measles outbreaks in both developed and developing countries.

"These cases haven't happened overnight", said Henrietta H. Fore, UNICEF's executive director. "Just as the serious outbreaks we are seeing today took hold in 2018, lack of action today will have disastrous consequences for children tomorrow", Fore said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports almost 160 cases in the USA since January 1. In the Ukraine had been recorded in the past year, with 35.120 cases, nearly 30,000 more than in 2017. The Philippines was second with an increase of more than 13,000 (from a little over 2,000 in the whole of 2017).

"There really is no excuse now for the misinformation, the mistrust and the complacency that has crept into measles vaccination around the world".

Brazil, which had no reported cases in 2017, recorded 10,262 previous year. Yemen, Venezuela, Serbia, Madagascar, Sudan, Thailand and France saw the next biggest increases.

Cases of a highly contagious disease, once thought to be eradicated, are on the rise in the United States.

Overall, the vaccination rate of kids in the United States has remained stable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors such trends closely.

The virus can be contracted by someone up to two hours after an infected person has left a room.

That number will soon be passed in 2019 as the country already has 12,736 cases and 203 deaths.

Kim goes on to say "As public health, we don't command isolations and we don't cancel out physicians recommendation if children are symptomatic it is always good to keep them home".

"Despite the astonishing figures many anti-vaxers refuse to comprehend the problem they have caused and the misery they are inflicting on innocent young children". DeGette told the audience that such disruptions were in violation of House rules; Messonnier then said that the vaccine doesn't cause brain swelling or encephalitis in healthy children.

When measles was first brought to North America by Europeans in the 1400s, he says, the mortality rate among American Indians-who had no natural immunity-was as high as 10%. "Other exemptions are for medical reasons as the MMR vaccine is a live vaccine, and people with compromised immune systems can not have the vaccine", said Fredell.

All U.S. states require most parents to vaccinate their children against some preventable diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella and whooping cough, to be able to attend school. Measles can be prevented by a vaccine. "If people want to look up their immunization history, they can certainly call our information line at 258-info".

Some adults who received their measles vaccine as a kid may need to get another shot to be protected from the viral disease.

The virus is common in developing countries, particularly in areas of Africa and Asia, according to WHO.
