"While some of our elected leaders sadly choose not to mention "Muslim" or "mosque" while denouncing the Christchurch attacks, the reality is that these horrific shootings and the Quebec City mosque attack on January 29, 2017, have left Canadian Muslim communities - and indeed, Muslims around the world - feeling very vulnerable and unsafe", wrote the Council's executive director Ihsaan Gardee.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year old Australian citizen, appeared in a Christchurch District Court and was remanded without a plea until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city's High Court on April 5.

The majority of those killed were at the Masjid Al-Noor, a mosque on Deans Avenue in the central part of Christchurch, with the shooting occurring around 1:45 p.m. local time.

The New Zealand-Bangladesh third Test match set to be played in Christchurch was cancelled.

Ibrahim said he managed to escape via the backdoor of the mosque: "Lots of people we were inside and there was a door on the right side for the ladies entrance section". The country's worst mass shooting was in 1990 when a lone gunman killed 13 people in the small town of Aramoana. Two improvised explosive devices were located in a auto, according to investigators.

The video footage showed a man driving to the mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside.

"London stands with the people of Christchurch in the face of this horrific terror attack", he said.

New Zealand's Police Commissioner Mike Bush said a number of IEDs that were attached to vehicles were found and made safe by their defence force.

The prime minister said the events in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" and acknowledged many of those affected may be migrants and refugees.

The Los Angeles Police Department posted to Twitter that while it had no indication that any related attacks would be carried out in the city, it would increase patrolling around L.A. mosques "out of an abundance of caution".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the attack was a result of Muslims being demonized.

He had livestreamed the shooting on Facebook.

We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we are en enclave for extremism.

Prosecutors in Bulgaria launched a probe into a recent visit to the country by the terrorist behind the attack.

Jordan's King Abdullah II tweeted that "the heinous massacre against Muslims praying in peace in New Zealand is an appalling terrorist crime". This, I want to assure people, is to ensure that all our agencies are responding in the most appropriate way, that includes at our borders.
