Before Tuesday's Oval Office meeting, Bolsonaro waived a visa requirement for U.S. visitors to Brazil and later in a Fox News interview on Monday night threw his weight behind Trump's immigration agenda, which includes a wall on the Mexican border.

During a joint news conference with Bolsonaro at the White House, Trump urged Venezuela's military to end its support for socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro, calling him "a Cuban puppet".

Venezuela is expected to be a subject of discussion.

The two also share a penchant for family politics, employing relations as some of their closest advisers.

"Even the friendliest of Brazilian governments was never that friendly", the official said. "This time, it is different".

His trip to Washington was be Bolsonaro's first overseas bilateral visit, an honor White House officials say illustrates the new president's commitment to fostering U.S. ties.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro visited the White House on March 19, 2019.

The United States is Brazil's second biggest trade partner after China. Socialism, Bolsonaro added, had "nearly conquered Latin America" under populist, left-wing governments like Brazil's former President Lula da Silva.

Trump renewed his call on Venezuelan security forces to desert Maduro, who still enjoys support from the leadership of the military. Bolsonaro also is a prolific tweeter.

Venezuela's government rejected "the risky statements" of Mr. Trump and Mr. Bolsonaro. President Trump phoned Bolsonaro within hours of him being declared the victor of October's election, during which he espoused loud pro-America - and pro-Trump - views. The agenda of the day was Venezuela, where Bolsonaro has thus far been reluctant to allow Trump to use his country as a staging ground for an invasion.

President Jair Bolsonaro would discuss "international themes in the region" at the visit to headquarters in Langley, Virginia, according to his son, Eduardo, a Brazilian lawmaker accompanying him on the US trip.

The official said the president took note of Bolsonaro's Trump-like rhetoric and social media presence, and called Bolsonaro to congratulate him within hours of his election.

The highest priority is the crisis in Venezuela, where the U.S. and Brazil - and dozens of other countries - have recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president with the goal of driving President Nicolas Maduro from power. Trump praised Brazil for recognizing Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's interim president and supporting the United States in providing humanitarian aid to Venezuelans.

Brazil has pursued a closer relationship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), to make buying United States weapons easier and to lower barriers to military and other cooperation with the US.

A senior administration official said Brazil plays an important role as an "interlocutor" between the USA and Venezuela.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States could impose harsher sanctions on Venezuela in its campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro. Not once did he challenge the claim that they are both fighting against basic civil rights for LGBT people.

A senior US administration official, briefing reporters on condition of anonymity, noted that Brazil has a close relationship with Venezuela's military and may be able to serve as a go-between with the security forces that continue to support Maduro.
