Facebook blames server problems for massive outage

  • Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

"I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours", the Telegram chief said.

At the time of writing, it appears that Instagram is the only major platform owned by Facebook that has publicly declared itself to be back in operation.

Now if we consider the fact that Facebook's services have been recently down for up to 14 hours, CCN reports that the social media giant faces an $89.6 million loss in revenue from advertisers.

That said, it will be massive if the number can be sustained and become permanent given Telegram's impressive 200 million user base. Of the products in the Facebook stable, the most direct competitor to Telegram is the private messaging service WhatsApp.

In November 2018, about 80 million Facebook and Instagram users experienced a similar outage that lasted for about a day.

Yesterday, though, before Facebook provided its explanation, rumours circulated about the cause of the outage, including a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, a rumour the company was quick to shoot down. "Good. We have true privacy and unlimited space for everyone", Durov posted from his Telegram account.

Facebook Apologizes for Outages, Says It Has Resolved ‘Server Configuration’ Error That Led to Access Problems

In a post on its Twitter page, Facebook blamed the outage on a server configuration change, but fell short of giving further details as to what that was all about.

Some media outlets branded the outage as the biggest in Facebook's history.

A Facebook spokesperson, Tom Parnell reportedly stated that the company is aware of the ongoing problems that the users are facing and that company engineers are now working on resolving the issues as soon as possible.

While some users could not gain access to Instagram and Facebook, others reported that they couldn't send or receive messages and images over the platforms.

A spokesman for the social network said the company was cooperating with investigators in multiple federal probes, without addressing the grand jury inquiry specifically.
