Jürgen Klopp: we don't need any big-money buys at Liverpool

  • Opinion Liverpool must treat Fulham as Bayern in latest title test

The last time the two sides came up against each other was in 2011, when Barca ousted United 3-1 in the Champions League final.

The team is now immersed in a bitter fight for the Premier League titke with Manchester City and have reached the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will meet Porto.

And now, as it has happened so many times before during this magical season, luck became Liverpool's lady once again as the mighty Reds drew FC Porto, a familiar foe who they absolutely vanquished in last year's tournament by an aggregate score of 5-0.

Juventus will go into this tie - a repeat of the 1996 final - as favourites to reach the semifinals, despite Ajax's stunning round of 16 victory over holders Real Madrid. They've lost their last six, and nine out of their last 10, in the league, a horrendous run which leaves them 13 points from safety having managed just 17 all season. But can they pull off another shock by eliminating Juventus, and Cristiano Ronaldo, from the competition?

There is guaranteed to be one English team in the semi-finals after Tottenham and City were paired together, with the first leg to be played in London.

Instead, they played with a style akin to their elite continental rivals and were patient, believing that they would take their chances and progress - which, with the greater space on offer at the Allianz, is what Liverpool did.

Liverpool's challenge for a Champions League and Premier League double sees them come up against Porto, with the first leg at Anfield.

Facebook & Instagram Experiencing Worldwide Outages
Facebook is now down with people all around the globe having difficulty accessing the world's largest social network. Facebook and Instagram applications are shown on the screen of an iPhone in Zagreb, Croatia, April 9, 2012.

However, United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær believes that his side can beat the reigning La Liga champions in the quarter-finals.

Twenty years on, he will be back in Barcelona for the second leg of the quarterfinal tie as Red Devils coach. Those games also start at 3 p.m.

"Let's not disrespect Porto because they got to this stage for a reason, but they won't be looking forward to that tie".

"I don't think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money", Klopp said.

Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovač insists his side can not compete with Europe's top clubs following their Champions League exit against Liverpool.

While in a genuine title challenge involving themselves and Manchester United, a late Yossi Benayoun victor in the Bernabeu against a Real Madrid team boasting the talents of Fabio Cannavaro, Arjen Robben and Raul was a huge confidence booster for Rafa Benitez's side.
