"Clear similarities were noted between Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 and Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610, which would be the subject of further study during the investigation", TrMoges told journalists.

Citing people familiar with the inquiry, the Wall Street Journal said Department of Transportation officials are scrutinizing the FAA's approval of MAX jets and a Washington, DC grand jury issued a subpoena to at least one person involved in the MAX's development.

The U.S. Transportation Department's inquiry, which was launched in the wake of the accident in October that killed 189 people, has warned two FAA offices to safeguard computer files, the WSJ reported.

Global rules require a preliminary report on the crash to be released within 30 days.

- Ethiopia said the Ethiopian Airlines flight had "clear similarities" with the Lion Air crash, as shown by initial analysis of the black boxes recovered from the wreckage of the March 10 disaster, in which all 157 people on board were killed.

Engineers are making changes to the system created to prevent an aerodynamic stall if sensors detect that the jet's nose is pointed too high and its speed is too slow.

Canada is re-examining the validation it gave Boeing's 737 MAX jets, following reports of a US probe into the aircraft's certification by the FAA, Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau said on Monday.

- Indonesia plans to move up by about a month the release of an investigation report on the Lion Air crash, its transport safety committee said.

Death toll rises to nine in collapsed Lagos school building

"The 737 MAX was certified in accordance with the identical Federal Aviation Administration requirements and processes that have governed certification of all previous new airplanes and derivatives", Boeing said Monday.

LionAir, which already has a sour relationship with Boeing following its October crash, has also announced that it intends to switch its $22 billion order for 201 of the 737 MAX 8 to Airbus.

"Despite Boeing working on an update to the controversial software ... the short-term hit is likely to be severe for the company", Russel Group stated. FAA and Boeing will face congressional questions about why the software upgrade took so long to complete and whether Boeing had too great a role in the certification process.

"What I can't forget is that she left an eight-month-old child and didn't come back", said Meselech Petros, whose sister Amma Tesfamariam was a flight attendant on the doomed aircraft.

Boeing's shares were down 2.8 percent at $369.20 in early trading, making them the biggest drag on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Ethiopia's transport minister said on Saturday it may take "considerable time" for investigators to find the cause of the crash involving the new aeroplane. The news came after an alarming Seattle Times report claimed FAA officials pushed engineers to hand off responsibility for the safety of the 737 Max to Boeing itself.

Regulators across the world have banned the Boeing 737 Max from using airports or flying across their airspace due to concerns about passenger safety.
