McConnell: Senate Will Pass "Emergency" Order Block

  • Sen. Rand Paul and Donald Trump

With Rand Paul's announcement Sunday that he would vote to to block President Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the U.S. -Mexico border, we have now entered an interesting moment for Senate Republicans.

"If we take away those checks and balances, it 's a risky thing", Paul said at a Kentucky Republican party dinner, according to the Bowling Green Daily News. "If we take away those checks and balances, it's a unsafe thing", he added.

Sen. Paul told reporters that he believes that ten Republicans senators will vote to end Trump's national emergency declaration.

Trump's plan reportedly involves using the "emergency powers to secure $3.6 billion from the Department of Defense's military construction funds to build his proposed border wall", according to CNBC, and then rerouting another $3 billion or so through a series of executive orders.

A later NFL Network report said Murray isn't expected to do any on-field workouts at the combine, including the 40-yard dash. Evaluating shorter players, especially at quarterback, is not as big of an issue as it was when I first started scouting.

Democrats argue there is no border emergency and that Trump is overreaching with his declaration given that the Constitution grants Congress the power of the purse strings. "Today, I think he's wrong, not on policy, but in seeking to expand the powers of the presidency beyond their constitutional limits", Paul wrote.

Trump announced on February 15 that he will declare a national emergency to fulfill his pledge to construct a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. More Republicans may be willing to come out against the emergency declaration now that the balance of votes has already tipped against the president. If all 47 Senate Democrats vote as expected, the Senate has enough votes to pass a resolution with 51 votes. It has 18 days from the day the House approved the resolution on Tuesday. The eventual deal included $1.375 billion for physical barriers. He also is invoking other powers to transfer an additional $3.1 billion to construction of a wall.

With Senator Rand Paul this weekend becoming the fourth Republican on board, the resolution of disapproval is now likely to be sent to Trump's desk, forcing the president into the tricky position of vetoing the measure and acting in clear opposition to Congress. I supported his fight to get funding for the wall from Republicans and Democrats alike, and I share his view that we need more and better border security. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Wednesday that he planned a vote on the measure within three weeks. The Senate leader said he's anxious that Trump's move would set a precedent for future Democratic presidents to make such a declaration for their own purposes.
