The Big Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee, Florida, posted on its Facebook page Friday, April 5, that hunters caught a female snake more than 17 feet long, and it weighed 140 pounds.

Scientists have caught a female python in the USA state of Florida that was more than 17-feet-long, weighed 140 pounds and contained 73 developing eggs, the media reported.

The preserve posted a photograph of four researchers holding up the giant reptile in the 729,000-acre swampland expanse west of Miami.

The Burmese python is native to Southeast Asia, but in recent decades the big snakes have become a slithering menace in Florida. In 2013, over 1,600 people registered to hunt the snakes as part of the Python Challenge, organized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists the largest Burmese python on record as measuring more than 18 feet long and weighing in at more than 100 pounds.

CNN reported that around 100,000 pythons are living in the vast swamps outside Miami and these snakes are considered as serious threats to native wildlife.

Still, this latest find is impressive.

The Everglades is a vast area with a tropical climate ideal for pythons to hide and thrive.

Florida holds competitions in order to encourage hunters to remove these snakes and keep a check on their population. The female python contained 73 developing eggs. Pet owners either release them on goal when they get too big, or by accident when hurricanes sweep through the state. The pythons, an invasive species overrunning the Everglades, pose a significant risk to local wildlife.
