  • Convoy targeted at US base in Afghanistan: Afghan officials

Three US service members and a contractor were killed and three other soldiers injured near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in a blast from an improvised explosive device, the US military has said.

Three American soldiers were wounded in the blast and were receiving medical treatment, the statement also said.

Qari Yusouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack and said the group's fighters also seized weapons and ammunition. The names of those killed were being withheld for 24 hours until the notification of next of kin has been completed, as per Defense Department policy. "They volunteered to protect their country", Gen. Scott Miller, who heads US and foreign forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement.

A reduction in the number of US troops in the country has been bandied about for months.

Abdullah spoke to The Associated Press on Sunday at the World Economic Forum in Jordan. But the Taliban say they will not recognize any government official attending the gathering as a representative of the Kabul government, only as an individual Afghan participant.

Earlier, the Taliban claimed to have conducted an attack with a auto bomb, saying "multiple invaders" had been killed. The insurgents dismiss the Afghan government as a USA puppet.

Three other USA service members were also wounded in the attack. 13 were killed a year ago.

The mission said a roadside bomb hit the convoy near the Bagram Airfield, killing three American service members, and that "the contractor who was reported as killed, is alive".

Last month two US service members were killed in Afghanistan while conducting an operation.
