At least five killed in powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes in South

Deadly storms continue to move across the South after spawning suspected tornadoes and damaging several homes.

The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are expected Saturday from Texas to Alabama.

A MS man, identified as 95-year-old Roy Ratliff died on Saturday when a tornado caused a tree to fall onto his home, Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said.

There were reports of multiple injuries in the Robertson County town of Franklin, the NWS said, and KWTX reported widespread damage there.

According to the Post, a tornado that struck the Central Texas town of Franklin destroyed 55 homes, and injured over a dozen people.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said. Damaging winds and some tornadoes are the main threats along this line.

ABC News reported two more deaths after a tornado ripped through Hamilton, Mississippi. Franklin is about 125 miles (200 kilometres) south of Dallas.

University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged. Some people had to be extricated from damaged dwellings.

Winds of up to 60 miles per hour (96.56 kph) were reported in Cherokee County, Texas, damaging two homes in Alto but not injuring anyone. About 13 miles west in Calhoun, another person died in a water-submerged vehicle, the wire service adds.

The forecast of severe weather forced officials at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, to start the final round of the tournament early on Sunday in order to finish in midafternoon before it began raining.
