  • Boeing CEO Apologises Admits Faulty Software Led To Deadly 737 Max Crashes

"We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 MAX accidents", Muilenburg wrote.

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said preliminary report indicated the plane had a problem with the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, commonly known as MCAS, which was activated in response to erroneous angle of attack information. The company also said it's reviewing the Ethiopian minister's report "and will take any and all additional steps necessary to enhance the safety of our aircraft".

In a statement, Boeing urged against speculating before the preliminary report and flight data from the plane are released. "Spirit and Boeing have agreed to work together to minimize the disruption to Spirit operations and the supply chain", said Spirit Aerosystems President and CEO Tom Gentile.

A report by Ethiopian investigators on Thursday said the crew of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed last month repeatedly followed procedures recommended by Boeing, but were unable to regain control of the jet.

The software update, Boeing said in the statement, adds layers of protection and will stop erroneous data from activating the system.

This comes after reports suggested pilots in both incidents followed Boeing's safety procedures before they crashed. They cited a similar flaw in the Lion Air flight of a 737 Max 8 jet that crashed into the Java Sea on October 29, killing 189.

The head of the Ethiopian investigation, Mr Amdiye Ayalew, said the full probe would take six months to a year, but that there had been no sign of "foreign object damage" to the aircraft. Now, the manufacturer says it is nearing the completion, expecting certification and the update implementation on global 737 MAX fleet "in the weeks ahead".

That committee will look at how effective the company is able to assure the "highest level of safety" for the Max planes, as well as Boeing's other planes.

The Ethiopian investigators' preliminary findings put the embattled USA aviation giant under even greater pressure to restore clients' confidence and demonstrate the airworthiness of planes that crashed twice in less than five months.

Boeing said it is still working with the FAA and regulatory agencies to develop and certify a software update created to keep the system from being activated unintentionally, along with additional training for pilots.

"From the days immediately following the Lion Air accident, we have had teams of our top engineers and technical experts working tirelessly in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration and our customers to finalize and implement a software update that will ensure accidents like that of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 never happen again".
