Timmothy wasn't in the room when her body was found, but now, police are testing the DNA of a 14-year-old boy found in Kentucky who claims he is Timmothy Pitzen.
Timmothy Pitzen was last seen with his mother in May 2011 at a water park in Wisconsin.
FBI agents from Louisville and Cincinnati said they are coordinating with the Newport Police Department, Cincinnati Police Department, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and the Aurora Police Department on a missing child investigation.
"To be clear, law enforcement has not and will not forget Timmothy, and we hope to one day reunite him with his family", an Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman said in a statement.
She said she had prayed over the years that he was with people "who would love him", and it would heartbreaking if that hasn't been the case.
And they had reason to believe he may still be alive: his mother left notes saying Timmothy was safe but would never be found. "We're still waiting to see if it is actually Timmothy", she also said.
Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a 14-year-old boy told police in Newport, Kentucky, that he escaped two kidnappers in the Cincinnati area and ran across a bridge.

Though Bourdin was clearly not a blonde-haired, blue-eyed teenager (he was almost 23 at the time of his claim), he was taken in by Barclay's family until a private investigator determined definitively that he was not the missing teen.
Police and the boy's family say there have been other false sightings over the years. They were driving a white newer model Ford SUV with yellow transfer paint, Wisconsin plates and a dent on the left back bumper.
Aurora police Sgt. Bill Rowley called the person's claim "a disappointment" and that this was another time the family had their "hope raised".
