The Carmichael Show Recap: Understanding Islamophobia And Its Mental Effects

The Carmichael Show recap reveals a new side to the character of Joe Carmichael after a young Muslim couple moves into the neighborhood. The development brings Islamophobia and its mental effects to the fore. The Carmichael Show, in fact, sees not just Joe but also Cynthia show signs of Islamophobia through the statements they make. This doesn’t of course mean that they actually understand that their statements are Islamophobic, according to the Vulture. Interestingly, Joe’s and Cynthia’s son, Jerrod, seems to take the middle path. In fact, throughout The Carmichael Show, Jerrod’s political beliefs aren’t explicitly defined. He’s clearly progressive and liberal, but he also thinks it’d be a good idea to build a wall around the entire country. So is that also a sign of Islamophobia. The fact is that there is a surge in Islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims in America. Round the clock cable news coverage, combined with a constant exposure to social media, contributes to a heightened sense of insecurity and urgency for all Americans and especially Muslims.Like us on Facebook So what’s really working in such cases? It’s a kind of psychology, and one that’s really disturbing. And the impact of it on Muslims is even more damaging, which the cast of The Carmichael Show probably doesn’t realize.   Brussels Terror Attacks: Terror’s Mental, Emotional Health Effects Can Be Long-Term “Studies have shown that many Muslims not only experience religious discrimination in their daily lives, but are fully aware of their devalued position in society,” according to a 2012 study. The study found that perceived Islamophobia has a “distinct effect on Muslim minorities’ health and identification.” Whether this will happen in The Carmichael Show remains to be seen. Though there have been few studies on Muslim health, the ones that do exist show that repetitive harassment is the biggest factor contributing to long-term mental health issues in Muslim populations. Whether the signs of Islamophobia perceived in The Carmichael Show will also lead to such mental effects remains to be seen, but the long-term impact of continued behavior of this kind would definitely be detrimental all around.
